My first time flying...? |
Hi, I'm going on a trip from Burlington VT to JFK, NYC. It's only about an hour-and-a-half flight, but it will be my first time flying, and I need to know what to expect. Just thinking about it makes me nervous. I'm not afraid to crash, I'm sure I'll be fine, but what does it feel like? Should I try and get an aisle seat so I won't be tempted to look out the window? lol. The most thorough answer will get the points. Thanks. |

Hi there,
I know your trepidation. Flying is a whole different sensation that you have to ease into. I recommend trying to get a seat in the middle of the plane, where you'll feel less of the turbulence and other bumps that come with flying. I love the window seat, because it gives me a chance to see all different types of terrain and cities, etc. It's pretty interesting.
You'll probably have ear popping as you climb - so bring some gum to chew while you're taking off. The motion will help ease some pressure off of your ear drums and canals. Also, make sure to have water to drink, because flying can cause mild dehydration. If you find that you're really nervous before take off, take a dramamine a half an hour before flight. You'll be relaxed during the entire thing. If you have an iPod, bring that with you to keep you occupied.
Know that the pilots and flight attendants have had extensive training in all areas of flight and you're in the best hands you could be in. Also remember that you're more likely to get into a car crash than a plane crash.
Check out this site: www.gadling.com
It's got a blog by an actual airline pilot. Look up Plane answers on his page. Lots of interesting information!
Have a fun and safe flight! |

Flying is fun! There's nothing to be scared of or worried about. (If there, is just make sure to listen to the attendents)
I don't really think it matters where you sit. If you sit by the window, you'll be able to see when the plane turns (all of a sudden it looks like you're facing the earth straight down, (but it really isn't))
Sometimes there's turbulence, so if you get car sick or boat sick or motion sickness, you might wanna take some medicine for that.
And Finally, when landing and taking off there can be a lot of air pressure so bring gum to chew (it helps).
(I personally get more thirsy in the air, so make sure you drink a lot of water before you board since they won't let you bring your own bottle in.) |

Relax, flying is still the safest way to travel. When the plane gets ready for take-off you'll feel it getting faster and faster going down the runway and then all the sudden you'll feel the lift off. It feels a little like going over a steep hill in a car. Once you're in the air it's more just like being on a bus or something. Your ears will pop and make sure to yawn to relieve the pressure so they don't start to hurt. If you hit turbulence don't worry, the ride will just get a bit bumpy for a bit, no big deal. Landing is much the same in reverse. As for the window seat...absolutely take one if you can...I love watching the city, roads and whatnot get smaller as I get higher in the air and love watching everything below as the plane is flying along. |

Flying is great, albeit a little cramped. You will taxi to the end of the runway, then take off with between 70 and 100% power. Climb gradually to cruising altitued, then level. Prior to landing, the plane will nose down slightly, cut back on power and you will feel like you are sliding forward in your seat. Just before landing, you will hear a loud thumping noise. Don't panic, its just the landing gear coming down.
Don't be nervous. It can be a fun trip. |

Ahh. First time flying.
I am a 13 yeard old girl... I personally LOVE flying.
It's my absoute favorite thing. My goal is to get my pilots license soon... So , Of course I love it. My favorite part is when you take off. It's like your speeding in a car or just starting a roller coaster going up...
I personally love window seats.. Once your up past the clouds... About 10,000+ feet... it's great. All you see is blue and it's not scary....
Occasionally there is turbulence... the plane shakes lightly. I think it's fun. My father is horrified of flying... So for everyone it is different.
My advice to you is bring a book or something incase you do get scared. And also some chewing gum. Most definently your ears will pop..Gum helps.
And also when your high up it doesn't even feel like your flying. Justl ike your sitting in a chair. Don't be nervous it should be fine. And JFK airport is great. I love it!
Yes taking off and landing you hear a loud noise... And there is some thumping. Do not panic. It is suppose to happen.
EDITED:
Planes can be fun , as long as you let it be.
Pilots know what they are doing. Your in good hands. Also , the plane crashes are only advertised because they happen so rarely. Think about it.. If they advertised car crashes there wouldn't be enough news channels.
It is a proven fact that flying is SAFER then cars...
It is the safest form of travel.
Now if you are not sure if you wanna sit by a window or not.. My best answer is sitting in the aisle area sucks. Your arm always gets bumped. Either pick middle or window seat. And if you don't like the window you can close it. They have shades to pull down. Maybe even take a short nap to calm you down on the plane. |

I live in Georgia and went to San Francisco last year with my chorus. The flight lasted for like four and a half hours, and it was my first time flying. It really thought that it was fun. I really is just as relaxing as sitting in your own living room. I had a window seat, which is what I would recommend. If you sit by the window be sure to watch cause it's really cool, unless you get motion sickness. You can kinda feel the plane moving upward and downward but, it's not bad. Landing is really nothing. My ears didn't pop until we landed on the trip back and that's a little uncomfortable but, it gets better pretty quick. If you chew gum on the plane it helps with the ear popping thing. My advice is to take a pillow and some music, I got the best sleep of my life on that plane ride. |

Flying is great. Sometimes you get turbulence (especially if you fly into some clouds during takeoff), but it's just a little bumpy, and nothing to worry about. The rest of the time it is nice and smooth.
And after takeoff, it may sound as though the engines are losing power. Don't worry, they're not. It's just the pilot laying off the thrust after reaching a certain altitude. |
