TERRI BERRI

NO EXTRA $$ for BAGGAGE CHARGE at AIRPORT - PLEASE ADVISE?

My friend has an emergency flight in 2 hours & does not have the extra $15 for the bag charge that he just found out about & because he has never flown before I think the dimensions are off from what he is telling me on his bag...........(he is also mentally disabled (not retarded - disabled on SSDI)......and from that I fear he may get there and have some astronomical charge. He will be flying with $0 - just the boarding passes his Dad sent. He is going to Louisiana to help his Dad who fell ill during the rebuild of his house that floated away in Katrina. They are the only family each other have. I can't help him because I have no credit cards & am physically disabled & housebound (can't walk). Is there anywhere he can go at the airport for help. He is flying USAIR and getting to JFK (NY) by the train/metrocard. Thank You so much if you can answer he is very scared. (He DOES have a debit card but it has $4 on it!!!))
Additional Details
it's 2:30 in the morning & he lives in transitional housing....NONE of them have cash......he has no friends but me - honest......this is a freaky emergency........& in his BIG bag is medical equipment that he needs (I guess dismantling the bag and throwing all the rest away is all he can do?) Seems ridiculous that they can't just send him a bill for that amt? .....or backbill his debit card?

is he CHECKING HIS BAG OR NOT
if he is NOT checking bis bag then there is NO fee!
the $15 .00 is ONLY if he is checking his bag
and it medical bag it would be better that he doeesnt check in the first place

He may be able to overdraft on his debit card...I could usually overdraft up to $200 on mine. If he has no money, its doubtful anyone in the airport can or will help, unless you find an awesome stranger willing to foot the bill. I would have left the luggage with a friend, so as not to worry about the baggage fee...and have it sent later.

If he can make it to a grocery store/wal-mart/target...they can usually give money from the debit card. Like overdrafting as I was mentioning..up to $100-200.

Don't panic. Speak to the Airline and let them know ablout the whole situation. If possible speak to the Airport Manager of the Airline. They should be able to help him.

Tell him to repack the bags and try and accomodate the same in the small bag.
Hope this helps

Call your neighbors, friends, and anybody to lend him just one dollar. Im sure people will get enough money for the bags.

Tight situation.

If his bag is small enough, he can just carry it on...

The $15 fee is only if your checking, if he has a small suitcase he can fill with the BARE necessities, it can count as a carry-on or a personal item and will cost nothing, if it fits the carry-on dimension requirements. If he needs help, he should be able to go up to the check in, and they might be able to help him, or when he gets to his gate, there may be a large desk with some stuartess' or people who work for the airline. If there is anyone, any friends who might be able to loan him some money, that would be very helpful. If he doesn't have the money, I'm not sure if they would be able to help him, they may though. If he is mentally disabled, I suggest you give him your number and have him keep it with him at all times, and if he needs to call you, should he ever need help, or if one of the employees needs someone to talk to, then they can call you and you can explain the situation, should you friend not be able to.
It might be really hard considering this is your friends first time flying, and on such unfortunate circumstances. I would suggest calling the airport ahead of time, explaining the situation, and seeing if there is someone who can help him, they may be able to assign someone to assist him to the gate, and off the plane when he gets to Louisiana.

Good luck!

Okay, based on your additional details, is there anyway you could get any money? such as you taking overdrafting in your account or something, do you have any friends who could lend you some money? He could ask a stranger if he could have $11? If he explains the situation, then they would probably understand.

Check the travel tools for USAIR. Or call the reservations desk. Make sure that you get the person's name and some sort of confirmation # to verify the conversation. They may be able to work something out with you. Good luck.
