Need some reassuring words on AIR TRAVEL !?

Okay, look at it this way. A group people have spent several million dollars building an aeroplane which will make sure that you are going to be safe. After they have built the aeroplane they test it again and again and again. This way up, that way up, one engine, two engines, no engines. They turn things off to see what happens, and on again and off again. They then take another group of people and train them thoroughly to work it, to make sure you are safe. They take a long time over it and train them on equipment that costs a another few million. They train them to fly this way up, that way up, one engine... you get the drift. Then another load of people check everything, and then another group check it again. They check the bits of kit and that the people who have been trained, stay trained. Just in case, another group check the trainers. If anything is wrong a whole host of people have to check, recheck and sign lists to say that whatever was wong is now fixed. Then you take another load of people to check you and your fellow travellers to make sure that nothing is going to happen - and they add in a load of technology to help out; and then they use a lot of people to check you again. All of this training, all of this money, is for you. Enjoy your flight!

Yes, air travel is a safe mode of transport. Looking at it from a physics and engineering perspective, there is nothing unsafe about what you are doing. Remember that there are over 10,000 flights in the air at any one time across the globe. The number of incidents that actually occur barely even register when compared to this.

I have been flying since I was a baby and it is safe, much safer than driving in a car(you are more likely to get into a car wreck on your way to the airport than to actually crash while on the plane), try to keep your mind of flying(reading, talking to you seatmate, eating etc) and think about what you will do once you get to your destination. Keep postive thoughts in your head and remember that ultimately, the God is in control, and the captain does the flying, so worrying won't do anything. Hope this helps...and have a nice flight. :)

I understand, I am not terrified but I do get nervous.
I just booked my first solo trip to see a friend in Phoenix...
I am nervous as HELL now, but I want to go, I'm not driving and I don't have anyone to go with me.

So, my focus is the great time I am going to have there exploring a state I've never been to, and for me I get to check mark another state off my 'been there list!'

Just think positive, take a tylenol or something to relax you and sit back and enjoy.

I fly numerous times a week and it is safe. Take a book, ipod, crossword puzzle, computer with dvd for a movie and headset. Focus on something else other than the flight and it will be over before you know it.

Well, I always try to sleep. A good pill (with proper perscription) always does the trick. If you dont have one, try some Pink Benedryl. Two of those usually knock me out pretty good.

Flying is very safe though. I do hate it too, but its the fastest way to get "there" from "here".

i feel the same way. i've never flown. i've always told my husband if he ever wants to get me on a plane he'd have to knock me out first. and i'd have to stay knocked out for the whole flight.

What I do is find something that comforts me and take it with me. I find myself to be very nervous too. I've only flown maybe 5 times in my life and all the hype now-a-days really doesn't help. I heard that the chances of anything happening are a million times better than driving.

Your best bet is not to worry too much before the flight. Some people just can't deal with this very well and that is okay. If it gets too bad, call your family physician and request something to help take the edge off while you fly. They will sometimes prescribe something for you to take the edge off when you get to the airport. You will be fine....just take a deeeeeep breath. <smiles>
