The Mad Dog 80 (thats what the pilots call their bird, MD actually stands for MacDonnell Douglass) is an amazing machine. It has been around enough for the mechanics and pilots to know all the tricks and what to look out for. The MD-80 is a well sought after assignment for AA and Delta (the two bigest users of the MD-80 and its variants) new hires The pilots at American are well trained and DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) is their home and they know the area better than you know the street you grew up on. I actually just checked the aviation weather forcast for DFW on Saturday, you should be in for a great arrival into Dallas. FYI, the largest cause of aviation crashes isn't terrorism or mechanical failure but pilot error (yes it doesn't matter if you consider light general aviation and small private planes or not). These pilots you'll be with have been drilled over and over in simulators on worst case senarios. They know what to do, btu really you WILL have a great flight. I can recall many types of auircraft crashing for so many reasons but never an MD-80. Don't sweat the fliht, I know you've heard it before but the ride to the airport is 100 times more dangerous. These aircraft get inspections for safety like you wouldn't believe (4 major tear downs a year to inspect everything, ultra sounds to find microscopic cracks etc) nothing like any car ever gets and the pilots spend more time simulating and training for absolute disaster in an airplane than some drivers spend in a car. |

Honestly, you shouldn't even ask that question. If someone answers it, you'll spend the whole flight thinking that every bump and sound means the plane is about to crash.
I have been flying at least twice a year since I was in utero and the worst thing that I have suffered is having my meal delayed due to turbulence. However, I've been in 4 car accidents, two of which involved someone hitting me, totaling my car, and landing me in physical therapy. Trust me, flying is so much safer.
Relax and enjoy your flight. Thinking about reasons planes crash is only going to make it worse! |

American Airlines is a reputable airline and the odds of you crashing are much less in the air than on the ground. The aircraft you are going to be on is a large plane and known for it's safeness. Don't freak out. What you may be able to do, is ask your doctor for tranquilizers or xanax which may help you to relax/sleep during the flight. |

American Airlines operates the largest MD-80 fleet of any airline--some 350 of them--so they're especially familiar with the aircraft. McDonnell-Douglas aircraft also have a well-deserved reputation for durability.
For what it's worth, American is my airline of choice. They're the largest airline in the world with over 1800 flights each day and they know what they're doing. I'd be more worried about some new security rule popping up and giving you trouble getting on your flight than your plane crashing. You'll be fine. |

If it wasn't safe, no one would do it. Seriously.
I fly American every week twice a week. No problems at all. |

Top reason for plane crashes is pilot error. You are still relatively much safer in a plane than in many other modes of transportation.
You can do all the research at the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. |

OK.. We fly AA all the time. If this is your first flight, nothing I or anyone else says will calm you.
The main reason is engine failure. The last flight I was on was about 2 months ago from Greenville,SC to DFW in Dallas Texas. Ok a tray table would not go into position so they delayed the flight 1 hr. so a AA maintanance person fixed a TRAY TABLE. So just imagine what they would do for an electrial or mech. problem.
My daughter lives in Dallas and we both fly back and forth quite frequently. Relax and have a nice trip.
Pilot error... this is because of all the small personal planes that crash. Not the reason for most commerical flights.
In my book AA pilots are the best. |
