On a airplane would a 1 year old sit on your lap or have a separate seat?

its a 13 hour flight.

Most airlines do not charge you full price for a child younger than 2. The child must be strapped in a seat belt (in their own seat) during take off, but once the plane has reached it's expected heighth in the air, then the child may be out of the seat and in your lap if perferred.

Hope I answered your question.

I don't think the question is about whether a not your son should sit on your lap, but rahter whether you feel comfortable with your son on your lap for 13 hours.
I think he it might be best if he had his own seat.

If you pay for a ticket for them then they would have a seat. If they are flying as an "infant in your lap" then they will be in your lap. some airlines have an infant bassinet that can be used. call the airline and make sure you sitting in a "bulk head seat" in order to use the infant bassinet.

You need to check this out very carefully with each airline. It used to be children under 2 could almost always fly as "lap babies", but the airlines are really tightening up on that. On international flights, lap babies are sometimes prohibited altogether, and I am not sure they are still free on all domestic flights. I have seen some fare lists that show children under 2 having to pay only half price if they have their own seat.

I think this area is still changing, so ask and visit airline web sites.

They are free under 2, but BRING a birth certificate or your trip can become hell quickly. The child can be held in your lap, or you can use thosae Baby Bjorne front holding baby carriers, my wife did that and loved it...

This is too long of a flight not to be able to put her down and have a little nap or rest. My niece is a flight attendant and one of her international passengers did not book a seat for her baby, the flight was sold out, and the mother tried to make a bed for the baby in the overhead bin. Needless to say, they took the baby out and gave it to her. Mother then tried to force the baby on her seatmate as he was the one who informed the flight attendant of the very dangerous situation.

Go ahead and pay for the seat. You will both arrive at your destination a lot better rested and happier.

It depends on whether you want to pay for a seperate seat for your child. Until a child is 2 they can be considered "lap babies" and you can hold them while on a plane. If there happens to be empty seats you can use them once you are in the air, but during take off and landing you will be required to hold the child. If you decide to purchase a ticket you will need to take your car seat on the plane with you. Persoanlly, I never bought seperate tickets for my children until I had to - saved alot of money & at that age they usually want to be held anyway.

I believe the cut-off to buy a plane ticket for a child is when they turn 2 years old. If they are younger, and you do not have to pay for a plane ticket, then the child will have to sit on your lap.

They would have to have their own seat when departing land so he could be strapped by a seatbelt
