Photo I.D.'s for flying? |
I'm a U.S. citizen and I've read that you don't need a passport to fly within the U.S. but just a photo I.D. Is this just a driver's license? What about children? What kind of photo I.D. do they need? |

Yes a photo id is correct. As long as your name and picture on the i.d you will be fine. For children, no photo id is needed. If a child is flying without a parent then they become an unaccompanied minor and the person checking them in will need to fill out an envelope and show ID when they sign it. From that point on the gate agent, then the flight attendant and then the gate agent at the landing station along with the envelope is all that is needed. The unaccompanied minor must wear a wrist band indicating so.
Hope this helps |

Yes the Dl for you is fine. But I have to tell you, to avoid ANY problems with the airlines or security, I obtained an ID for my 11 year old. You can get them at your local DMV as long as you have proper proof for your child. We brought the original birth certificate (with raised seal), ss card and school ID. It REALLY saved any problems at security. The TSA folks said they wished more parents did that. Also helped that we were traveling with a friend of his. While I did have a copy of the parents ID and a notorized letter stating that it was OK to take the child out of state, we were never asked for it. |

Children under the age of 16 - who are travelling with you - do not need separate ID.
For an adult, a driver's license is good ID. The ID just has to be issued by either a state government or the federal government. and have your photograph and name on it. |

A photo I.D. can be a driver's license or state issued I.D. -- it must be something "official" meaning it was issued by a government (so, for example, you gym membership doesn't count).
Generally children won't need I.D., but you don't say how old they are. It wouldn't be a bad idea to travel with copies of their birth certificates, particularly if you have a different last name as them. (I'm assuming you are their parent or guardian.) If there could possibly be an child custody issues that arise be sure you have appropriate documentation of your right to travel with the children. (This may sound weird but I travel internationally with my son who has a different last name than I do and I've been asked whether to prove I am his mother and whether or not I have his father's permission -- which I do!)
And if the kids do have a photo I.D., they should bring it with them just to be on the safe side and as another person said, so they can participate in the action! |

A valid drivers license is acceptable. If your kids have a school ID that is cool too. It makes things easier and the kids feel involved when they whip it out. |

You just need a drivers license and ticket, the kids need nothing as long as you are with them as a gaurdian. |

All passengers 18 and older are required to present valid and unexpired government-issued photo identification (federal, state or local). For example: driver’s license or passport. Children are not required to have ID. |

As everyone else says, your drivers license is fine for you.
Depending on the age of your children, you might consider a state ID for them. The reason I say this is, my 14 yr old son looks older than 14 and was going on a flight a few months ago. Even though he doesn't legally need an ID because of his age, I got him an ID anyway just to avoid any hassels. In my state it was done at the drivers license office. It was just $15 and now he has an official ID from the state. Security at the airport was easy since he had ID. You never know when he may need an ID again so it's nice to have. |
