Captain Art Griego

Pilots: Do we REALLY understand what keeps a plane from dropping out of the sky?

Seriously, there is a lot of THEORY out there about lift, aerodynamics, thrust, etc., but do we TRULY understand what keeps the glorified soup can we're flying from dropping out of the sky? Do we really understand what keeps us from going nose first into the closest free-standing structure like a radio tower or the side of a granite mountain?
Additional Details
Sounds like all of you buy into exaclty what the science community is trying to sell you.

Well, pretty much.

I understand what you mean. When you really think about it, it's a little mind boggling. But these theories, "captain", seem to be very correct, and seem to be making a lot of sense over the many years of aircraft engineering

Here's a better question for you. At some point back in the 1980s I was on a cross country flight when I spotted one of our engines on fire. Obviously I reported it, but why didn't they buy me lunch? Bunch of fricking ingrates if you ask me!
