Scared of Flying....Please Help?

Hi, I live in the UK and I am travelling to New York with my family in November. I am very excited about the trip as I have always wanted to pay my respects at Ground Zero - but I am terrified of Flying - should I see a hypnotherapist or are they a waste of money?

There are pharmacological methods of dealing with fear of flying, OR, you can just decide to relax, read a book, listen to music, and realize that you are safer on that plane than in London traffic. Think on the destination, focus on arrival and your purpose. You are coming to pay respects, let that help you show, and feel, courage. And by the way, Welcome to America!

I've never used one but you can visit your doctor and he can prescribe you something to take prior to the flight that will help with anxiety. It should calm you enough to take the trip. I've been flying since I was 5. There's nothing to be afraid of. You'll do fine. Just think positive. Enjoy your trip!

The worst bits of flying for me are take off and landing cos them are the bits when the pilot has to actually DO something.

I“m scared of flying too, that“s why when I came out to Spain the last time, I didn“t go home again. Been living here 5 years now!!!!

I think seeing a hypnotherapist is a total waste of money. It probably won't even work!!!! Many hypnosist are big liars and pretend they know your cure. Maybe to help you, you can try going on rollar coasters or higher rides. These rides are usually like flying. But in truth, flying isn't scary, it's just like riding a car... the only scary part for most people is when the plane starts.... but when you're in the air, you don't even feel it moving... if you're still scared, try finding something to do on the plane that will take you're mind off the flight or go to sleep... i hope this helps!!!

If it's an international flight, maybe the alcohol is free. They always tell you to not drink on the flight if you're afraid, but man, I'm telling you...it'll make you a lot more unafraid.

This is a true fact. The most dangerous part of flying is the drive to the airport. A hypnotherapist will help and have them help you in other ways that you may feel inadequacies.

just look forward to how exciting the trip will be and you'll get over it

Go and see your GP. I am terrified of flying. I have always been scared but every time I fly it seems to get worse. I am determined not to give into this irrational fear. Earlier this year I booked a holiday to the USA, I worried about the flight for months before and decided the only thing I could do would be to go and ask my GP if he could help me. I told him how I felt about the flight (he didn't laugh me out of the surgery) and he said because I was so worried about it he could give me tranquillisers to calm me down, he also offered me anti-depressants but I didn't think these were needed. I managed to get on the plane and once seated I took my tranquillisers. I slept for 8 hours and woke up just as we were landing. When I woke up I felt great and didn't have a hangover I just felt like I'd had a good nights sleep. My GP has also said he is quite willing to give me another prescription before I fly again. Go to your doctor and enjoy your holiday.

I was terrified of flying and did see an excellent psychotherapist, not a hypnotherapist - who spent time talking with me and putting the fear into focus. We then took a flight together and she made me do all the things I hated doing on planes - getting up, looking out of the window etc. It really helped, the fear was faced and whilst not completely cured, it was put into perspective and I found I was more relaxed the next time! Drugs will relax you and may get you through the flight (sometimes not), but this is actually fear avoidance and tends to make things worse longer term.

I now fly 2 times a week, occasionally I still get nervous, when I am tired or flying an unfamiliar airline, to cope with it I read and listen to MP3's or just keep myself busy.

There is nothing to be scared of with flying you are safer on a plane than you are driving in your car and how many times do you do that in a day, relax and enjoy your trip.

?
Request zantex or valium from your doctor. It helps me when I have to go to my tattoo removal session or going to the dentist for oral surgery.

Wow what a bunch of idiots on here tonight!! Ignore them dude. Their lives are soo perfect, all they have to do all day is be abusive! I'd love to go to NY, and i think it's really nice that you are willing to beat your fear of flying to go pay your respects. I too get a bit edgy on planes but you can lose yourself in a book or watch an in flight movie. Reckon your doc will give you something light to just relax you a bit. Good luck with your question and have a great Hol! Say a prayer at ground zero for me please.

Ground Zero is a building site right now so I wouldn't bother.

Take Nytol an hour before flight that will subdue you - save money on hypnotherapist for bars in Manhattan - they are well worth checking out

YOU SHOULD BE SCARED...WHAT IF ONE OF THE PLANES ENGINES FAIL ? YOU WILL FALL FROM SUCH A HIGH PLACE, HIT THE GROUND AND BECOME MINCED MEAT IN THE OCEAN.

WHAT IF THE PLANE CRASHES ? YOU'LL GET CRUSHED TO DEATH.

WHAT IF THE PLANE IS AFFECTED BY THE WEATHER ? AGAIN YOU WILL GET CTUSHED TO DEATH.

WHAT IF THE PLANE IS HI JACKED..YOU WILL GET SHOT TO DEATH !

SO IMA THINK AGAIN IF I WAS YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!
