Scared to death of Planes?

For starters I am 13 years old and my family decided that they wanted to fly. I am terrified of planes and Any heights. I just cant stand them I will have a mental breakdown. So when I go on the plane I am going to be absolutely terrified. I need ways to keep my cool and know what to expect. Also if you have any techniques to keep you calm, please give them to me.

There are several things you can do, one is to train yourself to breathe, focusing in on the in breath out breath, and thinking, "I have plenty of oxygen, I am perfectly OK." Once you are on the plane, try and sit in an aisle seat so that you do not have to look out the window. Often when I get nervous in a plane, I pretend I am in a car, feeling the bumps in the road. Plane noise is pretty loud and you can often lose yourself in a trance with the noise, (it is like a hum). You won't really FELL like you are high in the air, jet travel is pretty sophisticated and you can really distract yourself plenty. Watch TV, bring a portable DVD player, and/or music. Also, keep the air above your seat blowing on you, that will keep you calm also... just remember to breathe and everything is how your MIND perceives it, your brain only knows what you believe is. not what even your eyes see!! You may even find that you will enjoy flying once you try it... if worse comes to worse, you can always ask for oxygen...

You can do several things:
Always stay calm, a airplane is still the most safe way for transportation, cars are actually more risky in fact, so the risk is very small that something would happen.
You can ask your Doctor something to calm down or sleep on the plain.
Or you can stay home, but that's not the good solution, your problem would not be fixed then and you would miss a lot of fun in your further life to go on holiday and explore other countries in a easy and quick way.
Just challenge yourself and go for it I wish you a lot of courage, I also have fear in heights but flight many hundred's of times before.

Depending on how long the ride is, bring along an mp3 player and some cds that will keep you relaxed to listen to after you take off (they don't allow you to use cellphones or listen to music when taking off or landing). I was a little nervous my first time too and I went in 2003 so it's normal. Also, bring chewing gum or candy to suck on as you take off because the change in pressure as you go high up can cause your ears to make popping sounds and remember, you'll probably be making other plane trips when you're older so you won't get over your fear until you face it head on.

Try to be positive about it, instead of working yourself into a frenzy. Flying is actually very safe. Let your parents know about your concerns -- they may consider taking your to the doctor to get some anti-anxiety medication. OR, they may just think you are being overly dramatic, adn tell you to chill out.
I've flown for 41 years - usually 10-12 times a year.
As the plane taxis (drives) down the runway, start doing some breating exercises. Basically, just close your eyes, and take deep, slow breaths -- in thru your nose, our thru your mouth. It helps if you are sitting next to a loved one/family member -- hold their hand. Once you are airborne and level out -- it will mostly be smooth sailing. Even if it is not, there is nothing to be afraid of.
I also try to travel with noisze-reducing headphones. They nicely drown out all the engine noises, so you don't spend any time wondering "what was that???"
Relax, and enjoy your trip.

Ive been on a plane 27 times. You should tell your parents that you are afraid of flying if they don't already know. You should also ask them to take you to the doctor and ask him if their anything he could prescribe to you to calm you down on the flight. One prescription pill that I know really works is clanasimpan. It calms your nerves and makes you relax. You should take it 20-30 minutes before take off. Or you could close your eyes and get a nice relaxing cd that makes you relaxed durning the flight. But durning take-off you are not aloud to have electronics on. Good Luck & Enjoy your vaction

Well, I have been on a few planes myself. but, it was scary.

suggestions:

if you can't handle heights...Don't sit by the window. and don't look out.

keep your mind on other things. try watching a movie or listening to music.

you'll be fine. don't worry. i've been where you are...trust me. when i flew to california...it was really scary. but, then after we took off...i thought it was pretty cool.

good luck

i was never afraid to fly but everytime i do i always think that once we are up there its basically 25%chance we're gonna die.

the breakdown:
50% - will not crash

50% - will crash , so you have 25% chance to either survive or die!

the only advise i can give you is to think of all the embarassing moments in your life to get your mind out of flying.
