I think most airlines would offer a seat on another flight, but they don't have to. Depending on what country you're in, you might be able to complain to some regulatory body. However, it clearly is the passenger's responsibility to not miss the flight, as long as the airline makes a reasonable effort to help her, for example by calling her name over the tannoy.

I didn't really understand how the baggage bit fits in to this story. Anyhow, concentrate on getting your Mum's journey sorted, and see if you can get compensation or whatever after.

every other non English speaking person catches their flights OK.
so i cant see you have a complaint against the company. you should of made sure your mum understood what flight she was on and what time. it is the passenger's responsibility to get to the boarding gate on time not the company your mum was travelling with.

Usually airlines take better care of their passengers than that,sounds like someone really screwed up. Complain in writing
to an address provided on the airline's website,and you can e-mail
a complaint as well.
You shouldn't have to pay,that's poor customer service since it's
the airline's fault. I don't know how expensive that plane ticket is,
but if they refuse to compensate you maybe you should make your complaint more vocal with the word "lawyer" in there. Sometimes that helps.

Sorry, but it seems there's not a lot to do here if the company doesn't help. You don't seem to have a case. :-(

Depending on the the airline, some will charge an fee to rebook, some will issue a credit to rebook, and some just don't care and your mom would be considered a no show. I would speak to the airline directly it sounds like your mother should have been a "meet and assist", and they should have followed through.

go to your local cab, i must say if it took that long to get her bags back then surely they should have just put her on the bloody plane which would have been quicker, on the other hand, you cant make people look after your mum just because she doesnt speak english, and she was porbably missing so they cannot hold a flight for someone if they cant find them!

Sounds like she got to check in on time but then either was delayed going though customs (and therefore sould really have allowed more time with all the extra security checks), or got through customs but didn't make it to the gate on time.
You probably do not have a case to stand on as like a no show (where a person is late checking in for a flight and misses it) it is the customer who has to take some responsibility. Airlines advise people on how much time to leave to get to check in and through customs, so by the sound of it it is probably something you will have to get over. Most no shows cannot be rebooked on to another flight by paying a fee, so you will probably have to buy a brand new ticket. Just make sure this time she gets to check in and through customs with lots of time to spare.

Well it is not the fault of the airport staff that your mother got lost. You have a boarding gate and time and if you are not there, deal with it! Airports offer this service to help you, but do not offer any guarantees. If your mother cannot be responsible for making a flight on time, then maybe you should reconsider air travel. The boats are great these days...!
