Should I be nervous flying as an unaccompanied minor? |
I have flown several times before, always with parents, but i have never flown alone. I do not have a nonstop flight, with several stops each way. I also have a long layover. Is it irrational to worry about not finding the proper gate at the correct time, or sitting next to a psycho(since of course i have always sat by a parent or a friend)? I know that the flight attendants are supposed to help, but will they actually be beneficial? I am almost 14 so I probably shouldn't have this much anxiety, but you just hear so many stories about children who get lost or end up in china. By the way I am flying with Delta so I am classified as an unaccompanied minor. |

Hey I know what you are feeling....trust me. I loved to fly when I was younger (I am only 18) espically since I hated driving. But I was always with my father. Then one year when i was like 13 my aunt and uncle wanted me to vistit them in NC, and since my dad and them didn't get along I had to go by myself so I went through the same things that you are going through. Let me start off by saying IT IS VERY SAFE. But it can be scary. Your best bet is to take a deep breath and plan everything out<maybe write it down if it helps you destress>
-First you might want to talk to your parents about not leaving until you bord the plane, onces on the plane ask a flight attendant where your seat is and ask her to take you,
-onces in the right seat, just sit down and relaxe until its time to transfer.
-When you get to the other airpor to transfer try to find the gate if possible or even find any Delta gate <Delta is big so they usually have a big sighn where the delta areas are> bring up your ticket to the person standing in front of the desk, they usally are dresed ina blue outfit sometimes a blue hat. Ask him or her what gate and what time. <If you are thirsy, hungry or have to use the restroom I would suggest doing that first> as soon as you find the gate its best to stay there to avoid missing it.
-Just follow the two steps for as many times as you have to transfer. When you get to your destination if you do not have family meeting you at the baggage area just show the slip that you will get when your bags are claimed to any airpot worker (doesnt have to be an attendant, anyone who appears to work there will do)
*If you have everything set in place and worked out in your head you should do fine. Yes you are going to be nervous but just take a deep breath and relaxe*
***Helpful tip: chewing gum also helps take your mind of your anexity and not to mention helps your ears from hurting during take off and landing.***
I hope I helped. |

You'll be fine. I can't help you with the "sitting next to a psycho" thing, but that's what Ipods and books are for. Don't hesitate to show someone your itinerary and ask for departure gates so you know where to get your next flight. It's pretty easy and you'll do fine. |

Yeah i'm going to fly by myself in about a week and as I think more about the things I have to do I get more nervous. I've flown a lot too but never by myself. In addition to that i'm flying to Europe and i've never been there before--i'm transferring planes in Europe. I'm not sure if i'll have to watch the screens to see if my second flight leading me to my final destination is on time or late or whatever. And i'm 16! And i'm excited but pretty nervous about being by myself in a completely different country. |

A little nervousness isn't a bad thing. Keeps you on your toes. Just don't let your fears get the best of you. There will be people there to help you, and the likelihood of being seated next to a psycho is a lot less than you think. Just stay alert. Don't get lost in your Ipod or Nintendo. Pay attention to your surroundings, read signs, ask airport employees for help if need be, and you'll be fine. Good luck. |

Of course not! I'm 13 and I've been doing this since I was 10. It's no big deal. If you're flying UM, a flight attendant MUST be with you at all times. There's no way to get lost if someone is watching you the whole time. They hire an extra one just for you. You also wear a necklace thing with all your info. on it so if you do get lost, people can help you.
P.S. They treat you like a movie star and think you're "so brave and independent"! |

no its a breeze.....try to sign in as a meet and assist minor though if you've never flown to the place your going before, they show you to the baggage and make sure you have people waiting...its real helpful
plus they make sure you get a good seat! lol |

No, you have nothing to be worried about, the airlines personnel will be there to help you and if you find yourself having any difficulty, ask the airport personnel and they will get you where you want to go. |

No, don't worry about it. I've done it before, and I'm doing it again this summer. Plus, Delta is a fantastic airline. (I'm only 16)
Where are you going? I also have a layover, and I'm on Delta. We could be on the same flights! |
