Fear of flying is one of the most common phobias. There is no cut and dried easy solution to this or any other ingrained fear. Me, personally...it's spiders. Although I know it's an illogical fear...I fear it nonetheless. I have copied and pasted some information on fear of flying that you may find useful. Good luck and I hope you have a great time in Hawaii.

"Fear is like a self-replicating computer virus. It needs only to start for it to develop a momentum of its own. It is difficult for anyone suffering from a fear to examine it objectively because the very process of examining it will change it, and in all probability change it for the worse. Our fears control many of our conscious and unconscious thoughts and a fear will gather information to support itself, while at the same time prevent us from collecting information to dislodge or deny it.

Anyone who suffers from a fear of flying suffers considerable stress because the task of getting on a plane and flying away compared with ability to perform that task is almost non-existent. This causes very high levels of stress, which affect many aspects of our cognitive (thinking) processes. The first step to reduce stress levels it is to set realizable outcomes. You should set your expectations to something that you can realistically achieve, and then when you enjoy success you can raise your expectations gradually until you meet your required outcome.

Clearly if you have a fear of flying, you cannot expect to fly as happily as the crew do. Perhaps it would be more realistic to expect to be very anxious generally. Why not concentrate on a small part of the flight where your anxiety can be reduced. Perhaps your first task might be to walk around in the cabin or to let go of the armrests for a few moments; start with something simple, congratulate yourself, then set new targets"

"Overcoming a fear of flying involves making decisions that have serious and costly implications. A family waiting for one family member to make their mind up whether to travel or not puts enormous pressure on that person quite unintentionally. And the effects and influences of that occasion add to the pressures of the next. Someone with a fear of spiders or heights doesnt usually carry the responsibility of a whole family's happiness. Nor does it have the prospect of considerable financial penalties...

To introduce hard facts like statistics into the process puts even more pressure on to that person. This in turn aggravates the situation and puts more negative thoughts into the long term memory, but this is typically the families/friends/partners only avenue of encouragement. The downward spiral can go out of control easily. The task might seem hopeless but its not. To restructure the information so that it is allocated to another part of the brain is what many therapies do, whether its by some form of temporary self deception or by a structured approach. However, it needs to be done at a time of no pressure not at the airport or in the run up to travelling. So you need to start your strategy now. Its likely to take longer than you expect but the upside is that it'll be more successful than you believe. Be confident that you will succeed.

And smiling when you think of your fears will have a very beneficial effect. Try it."

Dont be afraid flying is still the safest way to travel. I've been flying all over this planet for the past 30 years and also lived thru 1 plane and 1 chopper crash. I stioll love it and feel much safer up there than in a car with all of these maniacs around me. If you are reall ythat afraid then theres nothing anyone can say that will take that fright away. I would suggest you take a strong sleeping pill and a nice interesting ebook to listen to until you fall asleep. Remember to ask the stewardess not to wake you for drinks or meals - and just sleep thru it. Something that help a friend of mine really a lot was to have a quick look at where the pilots work and say hello to them. After a short chat with the pilots and realizing that they were not stupid and didnt want to die either, my friend felt much better.

More people are killed each year worldwide by falling coconuts and lightning strikes than in air accidents. Don't worry about it. Living in fear limits people and is no way to live. Have no fear!

Happy travels.

You are much more likely to be killed in a car crash than a plane crash. Be careful on your drive to the airport.

I too am scared of flying but I have to fly to Orlando for work in October so I know where you are coming from...

Just to let you know unless something is horribly wrong the only time that the plane is scary is the first and last 15 mins of the flight. Other then that you are fine unless something is really wrong.. Also here are some hints to relax....

1) Take a personal DVD player to keep your mind on your favorite movie

2) Try to get a connection flight.. Even tho that non stop sounds good.. 10 hours on a plane when you are scared isnot a good feeling.. So see if there is a way of connecting in LA or somewhere in Cali for atleast an hour to get your feet on the ground. If you are REALLY scared you might even think about makeing a forced overnight connection so that you get a good night sleep before heading onto Hawaii..

3) Try to fly with a spouse, family or a friend to help talk to you while take off and landings...

4) If you think that it is going to be really bad, go to your Dr and ask for something to help you relax or sleep
