Should I take my chihuahua with me on an international flight? |
I'm traveling from california to hong kong over christmas for 2 weeks and i have a 9 month old 4lb chihuahua who i love love love to death! I really can't stand leaving her behind! I don't want to leave her at some petsitter with her thinking that i abandoned her! I have all her records ready at the vet but I'm not sure if I should bring her. Will she be traumatized by the flight? She's not exactly a barker, but she does whine alot when she's nervous. Also, because she's so small, will she be injured by the pressure when the plane is taking off or landing? And how will she pee? Do you think she can adapt to the warm and humid weather over there? Has anyone ever done this before and is it really expensive? Sorry, but I just can't decide if bringing her would make her any happier. I have friends willing to take her, but they don't know my dog's specific needs and she will cry all night without me!
Thanks for reading my super long question and please let me know if you have any info!! |

Hong Kong has very strict laws regarding bringing pets there, although dogs and cats from the US may be exempt from quarantine, even dogs that are transiting through Hong Kong must obtain permission from the government, not to mention the paperwork involved in bringing your dog back to the US. I doubt if there's any airlines that will allow your dog in the cabin, and your dog will have to fly in a pet carrier in the cargo hold for 14-15 hours, not a good thing for your pet. The weather is not hot and humid in December, but Hong Kong is a very crowded and bustling big city, hardly a good place to bring your dog, not to mention the issues you will have with hotels, public transportation and going out with a dog. Do yourself and your dog a favor and leave the pooch at home.

Long flights are not enjoyable for people, why would you put a little animal though all that chaos. No. Leave the Little guy at home with a caretaker. Enjoy your trip. And let your little friend have a vacation at home. |

sunny-d alright!

I would say not to do it. It sounds like a huge hassle, especially if you're flying into another country. There's probably a lot of red tape you'd have to deal with. Like everyone else said, you'll probably have to place her in quarantine, and that could be for longer than you would be in Hong Kong anyway. The only reason to take a dog to another country would be if you're moving there or are going to be there for a long time.
I'm sure your dog would appreciate home a lot more than the trauma of a flight. As someone else said, international flights are hard enough on humans. Why take an animal through that unless absolutely necessary? |

I personally wouldn't. I have a chihuahua myself and he gets nervous when we're just driving! Also, they may not be able to adapt to the new environment. I'd be uneasy having my dog in any foreign country. There's some messed out people who'll take her from you. If you do decide to leave her, find someone shes comfortable around and that you trust. I know it's hard to leave her but wouldn't you feel better knowing shes safe? Hope this helped. Have fun on your trip! |

Please don't take her there. If you must, check with all the requirements for importing a US dog to a foreign country. There may be a quarantine period and the dog won't like that. Give her to caring friends. |

Leave her at home! Most countries require that pets entering their countries be placed quarantine. It may last several weeks. |

I would check out and research pet kennels in your area,it is better if you leave her at home or in the kennel, sometimes bad things can happen to our pets while flying, and she just might be better left in the US. |
