Should airlines charge obese people for two seats? |
Mrk and Brian were discussing this topic this morning, and people seemed divided. What is your opinion, and why do you feel that way? |

I think the seats should be bigger. I am 6'2 and of normal weight and the seats are quite cramped as is (especially leg room wise). The seats should not be designed for a 5'6 person, 140 pound person.
That said, if they don't make the seats bigger - they should charge people who can't fit into one seat extra (ie a second seat).
The same would go for a bodybuilder who can't fit in one seat or an 8 foot tall person who would have to go in first class instead of coach. |

Yes, they would charge you for two seats if you wanted to put your luggage on a seat.If you are going to take up 2 seats you hve to pay for them! |

I agree with Mark R, the seats need to be bigger but that'll never happen so yeah they really should be paying for two seats... |

How many times will this be asked today?
Of course they should, and have been for years. I don't know who Mark and Brian are, but they need to come out of their cave more often.
Space on a flight is sold by the seat. You need two, you pay for two. I'm 6'7", and find the seats accommodating for people of average size. Most Americans aren't of average size.
Here's another way of looking at it. At 6'7", I must buy clothing in tall sizes. Because of that, I pay more for clothing than "average" sized people. The clothing manufacturers use more material in making those tall sizes. Should I have to pay more? Of course. I'm getting more. My height is they way I was born. I didn't get there with a poor diet, yet I'm not going to complain about it. |

Yes! As a former flight attendant, they would ruin the flight for everybody. People would come up to me constantly and say "I don't want to sit next to him" (because the fat person would spill over onto the other persons seat). Now is that fair to the person who gets stuck sitting underneath someone in a tiny area for hours? No, being fat is YOUR problem not the world's YOU handle it! -do not ruin other peoples live because you have no self control. "thyroid problem" -yeah right. |

Personally, I think they should make seats bigger. But that's just me.
If you've ever sat next to anyone large on a flight longer than an hour the answer would be yes. |

The trend is to charge extra for space. |

Well, the airline can make their own rules. For example, "we have the right to do......" Just like a restaurant has the right to serve certain people.
The airline is out to make money. And their objective is to fill every seat of the plane and charge for every seat on that plane to maximize profits.
So, if a larger person is sitting there and taking up two seats, theoretically, they could be charged for two seats.
It's just like me going to a newspaper stand and paying for one newspaper and taking two. They're all sitting there, but it doesn't give me the right to just take as many as I need. So, if I take two newspapers, I should pay for two newspaper. The price I pay is for one piece (unit). Same thing with the plane. I paid for one seat, I should use just one seat. However, if I use two seats, then I need to pay for two seats.
But let's look at the word "obese". If a person is so obese that they need to sit in the middle of two seats, then, yes, I think they need to pay for two seats. However, if there is someone who is sitting in one seat (buttock on one seat), but their body is protruding to the seat next to them, then, I think they pay for one seat.
I don't think the issue stems from a person who is mad because they have to sit next to an obese person and the person's arms, stomach, and legs are in the other person's "personal space".
The "pay for two seats" issue should be for those people who sit in between two seats. |

if the seats were for the average sized person and not made for midgets, us larger people would not need 2 seats. when i fly, i always get a window seat and squeeze up against it so i'm not bothering the person next to me. |

If they take up two seats then yea, charge them, if not, then no
ooor just charge them anyway to make them feel like they should do something about their obesity :x |

I always thought that they did! If a fat blob can't fit into one seat, then two have to be paid for. I remember when the bass fiddler for Ella Fitzgerald had to pay for an extra seat for his bass fiddle! The same should be true today. You pay for the seats you occupy (applies to children as well).
