Airlines, especially European airlines are moving to a pay-by-weight basis on luggage. This could extend to passenger seating in the future. At the moment it's based on the amount of space you take up, and if you need 2 seats to sit down, you pay for 2. |

I am a grossly obese person, waiting for gastric bypass surgery. I don't fly because the seats are not comfortable. I haven't flown since I weighed <200 lbs for the same reason.
If I ever had a reason to fly, I would be happy to pay for two seats, but both those seats would be MINE! I would also expect twice the service from the attendant. and twice the courtesy. |

YES!! I think bigger ppl should have to pay for 2 seats because they are going to take up 2 so it is only fair, even in the movie theaters it should be that way also.. My boss just flew some where last weekend and he sat by a guy that weighed about 400 lbs and he could not let the arm down on the seat so he took up 1/2 of my boss's seat and than fell asleep on him for 4 hrs!! so yes they should pay for it.. |

If you take up two seats you pay for two seats - Personal responsibility is key. |

Take up 2 seats, pay for 2 tickets.... |

If they can squeeze into one seat then no. If they take up an additional seat then they should pay for 2 seats. |

I sat next to an obese lady on the way back from Australia, she had no problem getting up or down from her seat, you'd be surprised how quick anyone can move in an emergency. |

Most carriers have pretty lenient rules here. Southwest, for example, makes you purchase an extra seat, but will refund you that cost if the flight isn't full. If you're concerned about it, I would use the 800 number to book your flight, and ask about each carriers policy when you call.
It's unfortunate how selfish we've all become. I've seen passengers get pissy about having to sit near: fat people, minorities, kids, old people, tall people, and even anyone else at all. Here's the deal: if you think you're too good to sit with everyone else, pay for first class. That's exactly why it's there.
OK, I'm done ranting now. :-) |

if they have to take up two seats than they should have to pay for two seats thats my philosophy |

Yes - and they should also get 2 meals.
Unless of course they are one of the few overweight people who has a genuine underlying medical reason for their extra weight gain - then all they should have to do is be able to show a doctors certificate as evidence - because it would be incredibly unfair to charge extra to the people who are in that kind of situation. :-) |

Yeah I agree with the two seats two tickets rule. However I have really wide shoulders and nearly take up two seats and I wouldn't call myself obese. I hate the aisle because I always get hit by people and the cart. |

Grossly obese people who do not care about their health problems, should pay for it.
Medical insurance premium are higher or even cannot get any.
Cemetery plots and caskets are for normal size people, so they have to pay for the extra space and special made coffin.
I don't belive they will fit in a Mini Cooper either nor a normal car, so they have to pay more for a car or actually a truck with special adjustment made (cost money too)
Even clothing must be taylor-made (cost more). I don't belive they can find their size clothes at Wal-Mart or Target.
This is unfortunate, but most of these grossly obese people are just hurting themselves more than bothering the "normal" height and weight people. |

Absolutely not. Airlines should provide bigger seats when the majority of Americans are getting fatter. |

Yeah, you are kinda right. |

What airlines ought to do is create bigger seats and charge everyone the approriate price. The problem isn't that people have gotten bigger so much as it is cheap airlines overcharging everyone for poor quality. And as one respondent stated, if you have an attitude with the idea of sitting next to someone in "coach" (because we know that is where the seats are so compacted), then you should pay extra for the privilege of more space in first class or business class. Or, how about requiring grossly obese people to pay for an upgrade to business or first class and have them seated there (and receive the extra service as well). |

I think if they can bring a small friend or a child to occupy the seat next to them, then they should only pay for the two people (one big, one small), and not three seats.
I suggest very obese people travel with very small friends. |

they should pay the same price they are only going on the same journey, some people cant help the way they are, through medication or other issues, and it wouldnt be fair to charge them double, how about the airlines make bigger seats for them, after all they are allowed to be as comfotable as anyone else, and its not just in america, its world wide, you get big people any where,in any country,so how about why dont we stop running fat people down until we know why they are like that, not that it has anything to do with you, me, or anyone else, certain health issues and medication make you put weight on, why penalise them, you dont know what you or your children will be like one day, this is my opion |

I believe that everyone is equal.... Not in appearance, though. I mean that whatever you look like... Airline seats shouldn't cost more! |
