Should obese people have to pay for 2 seats on an airplane? |
What about people who are obese because of a medical condition or medication?
Airlines decide the size of the seat. Should airlines be able to dictate how big a person is supposed to be? |

Good question. Rather controversial and I am sure people will be split on this issue.
Some people are very big - and not all are that way simply because they just eat a lot (if you think that - then you are very misinformed). Some of these people already have more expense with medical treatment and medication, paying for TWO seats are just going to put them under more financial pressure. They are the least likely to be able ot afford it ( a bit like people who have severe disability - they have more expense with medical care and they are the least who can afford it if they are on government assistance)
The other issue is... the size of the seat. The airline basically are saying that IF you do not fit into their seat - you are obese! All they have to do is reduce the width and anyone who is a big person (and not necessarily "fat") is at a disadvantage... We all are different sizes, you know.
And so what if the big person take up TWO seats? It's not as it it happens EVERY DAY and on EVERY FLIGHT. The airline makes enough profit as it is, surely, they can accommodate ONE seat.
My opinion.

I came back from The Philippines last year with Qatar Airways. I am 6'2" and 200lbs so not fat. However, I got sat next to a 30 stone guy who ar$e had to be prised in and out of his seat and it was simply uncomfortable to sit with his shoulders pressing against mine for 7 hours. I didn't bother complaining because he was a nice guy. But it was unfair for me to have to suffer discomfort for his problem and he should have been given a bigger seat in club class and charged accordingly. |

In short... yes
if they take up 2 seats then they should pay for 2 seats. I get charged if my suitcase is overweight so dont start talking discrimination!! |

Yes. |

If someone is going to use two seats than they should pay for each seat they use. Otherwise, it would be discrimination to change someone more because of their weight. |

Yes they should be charged extra or even barred from flying. People know that airline seats are small and they should be expected to fit into the seat and not overflow into their neighbour's.
It is a safety hazard for the other passengers and I feel the airlines should have the right to refuse to carry them if they want to. How do you get around some of these people if you wish to go to the bathroom or god forbid there is an emergency their large backside will fill the aisle and they won't be able to use the over the wing exits so they will block the aisle to get to one of the doors. |

yes, but maybe they have to pay for two tickets... and they will have two meals and two drinks! ;-) |

yes, because if they don't they are disturbing the other passengers next to them...
BUT if the plane is not sold out, and there are empty seats they should be reimbursed for the second seat and given the oppertunity to extend into two seats, since that one will not be filled anyway, just like any other passenger would take advantage of the extra room next to them if it was there. however, they should be given priority access to areas with an empty seat next to them because of the circumstances of their disease
otherwise, if they want two seats, they should pay for it. i am 110 lbs, and if i wanted to stretch out into two seats or lay down across three, i'd have to pay for it! if they want the same amount of room they should pay for it too! if not, that's discrimination against normal sized people as we a not given access to the same program of having two seats for the price of one!
their shoulders extend past the middle and get in your way and their butts ooze from under the armrest into my area---- it's not pleasant! one time a lady was so big she couldn't put down the armrest and i was stuck pressed up against the window, half of a seat with no armrest!
the airline doesn't dictate a person's size, it simply wants to cram as many passengers into a plane to increase its profits. it also wants to create a good flying experience for all the passengers to create revenue. the airline want to dictate its profits!
now they charge too much for one seat, they even charge $2 for water on US Air, it's all about making the most money as they can! |

Seats should be comfortable enough and large enough to accommodate ALL sizes of passengers. They charge enough...so should insure comfort |
|

Hello!!!!!!!!!
|
My only concern is, what if they take up 2 seats and they are taking up the entire seat you paid for (like you can not fit in your seat at all because of them). |

You have to have a lot of extra pounds on you to be considered obese. Medical conditions and medicines might cause someone to be overweight but not obese. I do not know if obese people should pay for two seats, but if the airline decides to charge them for two large people should be reasonable and accept it. |
