Should obese people pay for two seats?

Another airline just started charging for another seat if you can't drop the arm rest or buckle a single seat belt. How does every one feel about having some giant person squishing you out the window?

Shelley, I'm sorry, but "Here's Your Sign."

All airlines are right at the ragged edge of staying in business, or have you forgotten the several that went out of business last year. So if you cut back on the number of people in an airliner, there's going to be no profit in time, or MUCH higher prices.

I'm 6'7". As such, I have to pay higher clothing prices for Tall sizes. Should the clothing manufacturers give me a discount to "normal" size clothes? I mean I can't help how tall I am, right? I don't see obese people complaining to clothing manufacturers because they have to pay more for larger sizes. Why do they have the right to complain about airline seating?

You use two seats, more space than the average person, then you pay for that extra space. Or find a different way to get to your destination.

Stacey
Of course they should.
If they are using two seats they should pay for two seats. That's one less person that can fit on the plane.

Melissa
Yes, I think they should. I once sat in between 2 overweight individuals and it was a nightmare. I could barely move at all. If they take up any room in the seat beside them, then they should have to pay for that seat.

I do agree that it's not a big deal when the flight is not full - they shouldn't have to pay for an extra seat when it wouldn't be occupied anyway. But if the flight is full, then they should have to pay for a seat that they are taking up and that someone else could otherwise occupy.

Yes. It doesn't sound like a big deal until YOU'RE the one sitting next to them.

Additional for Shelley L, Below. Re: change their seating configuration...

So let's say they remove 20% of the seats so you and your entourage have more space... Whadda think, your tickets are going to cost the same? Nope... The price per ticket will skyrocket, and you will be the first one on YA to complain about the "high price" of air travel-- You cant have it both ways.

Chris
If they want to fly on that particular airline, yes. I don't think it is particularly fair. I've never flown in a full airplane ( just luck, I guess ), and on these flights I see people flipping up armrests and laying across the whole row to get some sleep. If the plane is full though, it changes things. If a person takes up the space that two people can comfortably occupy, then yeah, they need to pay for that extra seat. Now if the plane is below occupancy numbers, I don't see what the problem is with an obese person paying for one seat, since there are so many free seats and other people, and even flight attendants don't seem to mind if you get up and change seats or take a whole row as I said before.
I've never been crushed by an obese person on a flight.

I had to "share" my seat with a large sweaty man once, who, just to add to the problem was nervous. GAHH!!!

Hasnt been mentioned they use more fuel too! I know its just a small point but on a bigger scale 40 large people will use more fuel then 40 skiny people.

DEFINITIVELY!!!!

No. If the average size of a person is bigger than it was fifty years ago (both horizontally and vertically), then airlines should just make bigger seats.

What about pregnant women who can't fit in one seat..? should they pay as well. What about the guy (or girl) who's over 6.5 and has a frame to match.. they are not "fat" and still don't fit in those seats.

The airlines should make comfortable seating so that we don't have to sit in each others lap. A man or women who generally weight 190 -200lbs can't fit side by side with others of the same size. And what happens to those with wide shoulders ... No way can you sit shoulder to shoulder with a decent sized guy. It's the pits. Anyone who works out hard in a gym to get some upper body cannot fit should to should in airline seats.

It's not necessarily about the size of your butt.. but general girth. and unless your a size 2.. you don't fit in these seats.

Airlines shouldn't be rewarded for being greedy.. they should be made to change their seat configurations.
