Should we drive or fly?

Planning a trip in the near future to Orlando, FL with the wife & kids. We live in Ft Lauderdale, FL. My wife wants to drive (4 hours) I'll rather fly since the kids have never taken an airplane. Wife thinks we'll save money by not flying nor renting a car. I think the airport and flying will be a great experience for the kids. What should we do?

Wonder
The glory days of air travel are OVER. It'll take 4 hours just to get checked in and checked out. The kids will have plenty of opportunities to fly.

Superfudge
Some of my fondest memories are those family vacations that we did road trip style...sitting in the backseat with my brother, looking out the window and making faces at people in other cars, or screaming at cows and horses if we happened to drive by a farm. Occasionally we would start fighting and my father would reach around with his spanking hand and try to swat us into quiet. And he'd threaten to turn the car around. Or he'd threaten to make us walk. And then my brother would say, "Dad, I have to pee!" So my dad would say, "Again?! Ok, hold on. Hold on. I'll pull into the next rest stop." So my dad would pull into the next rest stop. And my brother would go, "PSYCH! I don't have to pee at all! Ha ha! Made you pull over!"

Those are quality memories, man.

Going on a plane is not the same.

driving is probably less expensive however, flying is much safer.

flying nowadays is more of a hassle than it's worth. Only 4 hours? Drive, man. Not like the kids will never have the opportunity to fly in the future.

I fly at least once a month with my job, and I've found that security gaurds are always itching to rough someone up or go through your bags. Kids and the elderly are no exception. Sad but true.

Well look at the difference in prices. I mean gas prices are kind of high, so look to see which would be cheaper-Driving or Flying.

Look at it at that perspective :)

well you wil save money. but your kids will probably get very bored, or want to be there sooner, flying will definatly save time though

Since you live so close, I would opt to drive but you could always look into going to Disney Land in CA so that you could fly :)

it might take longer to fly, i mean, you have to show up like an hour at least before the flight, they are ALWAYS delayed now a days too. i would say drive. do you want to risk lost luggage when you could have had it in the car the whole time?

lans183
drive flying is too much of a hassle especially for somewhere that sonly 4 hours away

fly fly fly. that $3-$4 per gallon gas and those kids bickering in the back seat is a mental breakdown waiting to happen. sure, you're going to have to deal with the other passengers and their peopleness on the plane, but atleast you can run to the bathroom to relax with out losing a mile.

Fly .. if there's not anyone on board carrying a deadly disease. Quicker also. Driving is bumper to bumper traffic. Gas is high,,, etc.

I'd say, DRIVE. Save the flight for a family vacation somewhere out of the country.

But think about the difference about prices for gas and prices for flying. Flying is more expensive as far as I'm concerned. It's like (enter amount) a ticket per person for flying, while driving, it's (enter amount) for a group. Think about that.

I would drive. It's only a 4 hour drive. We go to the cabin in the mountains once a mmonth and it takes almost 3 hours to get there and that is really nothing!!

Don't let the kids get bored, pack games or something.

Sure an airplane trip would be great for the kids, but I guarentee it will take longer for you to fly there than it will to drive, from start to finish and then you have to get a rental.

I would say drive, you'll save money & time and get to spend some very quality time with the family, especially on the ride home, you'll be able to talk about the vacation. (once the kids stop fighting of course, cuz we know all about that "last day of vacation" fighting that goes on).

Have a great time, no matter which travel method you take!

You guys are doing this trip for the kids right? Ask them . If they don't give you a straight answer , write down the answers and stick them into a hat. Let the children choose , its all for them rite?

oxblondesrcoolxo
i would fly...its faster, more exciting for the kids, and the veiw from the air plane will make u and ur kids smile..its so beautiful..=)

It will be a lot cheaper to drive, and roadtrips can be fun. Why waste the money on such a short flight? Save flying for at least a 6 hour drive or its just not worth the money even with gas prices rising. Fly for a trip a lot farther, and the kids will thank you for not making them sit in the car for say a 8 hour drive instead of a little 4 hour one.
