Terrified of plane trip over ocean - how to deal? |
I can barely deal with being on a plane at the best of times - hearing fatally disastrous noises and fearing that any second I'll smell smoke, see fire, etc etc. How can you pass the time faster especially when you're hours away from the nearest airport? |

here are a couple suggestions:
- get an aisle seat or middle section seat so that you can not see out the window.
- rent the headset and watch the in-flight movie
- buy a pair of earplugs (cost less than $1) at an airport sundries store and sleep on the plane.
- have a few drinks and relax. |

Flying over water is no big deal. The scariest moments happen when you hit an air pocket that causes the plane to drop, but you have that over land, too, so don't worry about it.
One way to kill time, is to read. Bring along a nice thick book. Chances are, you'll get so involved in what's happening in the book, you won't notice the plane landing at the airport.
If regular reading isn't your thing, bring along some cards or a puzzle book of some sort. (I don't think they're banning pens and pencils on airplanes yet.)
Bring along your MP3 player. Plug in, close your eyes and presto changeo, you're at your destination.
Just remember, you're much safer in an airplane, than you are in a car. |

Well, if your scared to look over at the ocean, just close your window! =) Also, if you have a DVD player, buy a few movies and time usually goes by fast. Also if you want to get buy cheaper than having to buy DVD player, bring your CD player or iPod, or whatever you have with you. You can even bring a deck of cards and play with yourself, or maybe ask the person next to you if they want to play. And try to sleep! That's probably the cheapest way to pass time! =) Have fun! And hopefully I helped you out! |

One great way that I've found over time is to buy noise canceling head phones (I've bought the sony brand) and it will block out most of the noise while you listen to music. You can turn the them on with out music as well, serving as earplugs. They are great to use in order to focus on the music or movie that you are watching. |

Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger traveling on an airplane. Experience shows otherwise, considering that over 50,000 people are killed on the highways every year. Media coverage would suggest that airline crashes happen every day. Studies have shown one would have to fly once a day every day for over 15,000 years in order to statistically be involved in an aircraft accident"
Flying is very very safe. Don’t worry about terrorists that is the least likely thing to go wrong on a commercial flight in the US these days. Flying in the United States is very safe, there has not been a major airline crash in the US since November of 2001! That is a long time for no major crashes and only on fatality in the last seven years for the Major Airlines in the US.
Even when there is a problem on an airplane, if an engine fails on takeoff or an engine fire etc.. 99% of the time the plane lands safely. Planes these days are amazing piece of technology and the pilots are trained better than ever. If you not afraid to drive in a car you should not be afraid to fly in a plane.
Just sit back relax and try to enjoy the flight. Its one of the safest things you can do much safer than driving a car, walking down the street, or even sleeping in your house. More people have died on North American highways in the year 2006 than the amount of people who have died in powered flight aviation whole 104 year history!
Also the best way to completely get over your fears is go to you local General aviation airport and take flying lessons! Once you fly in a small airplane a few times and learn that airplanes fly and that’s all they do you will be much more confident with flying on commercial planes. You will learn a lot with a few flying lessons. I could even teach you a lot by just showing you my Microsoft Flight Simulator. Flying is a great experience, once you get used to it and learn what makes airplanes fly etc.. your fears go away trust me, I used to be a little bit scared to fly too. Now I LOVE it. |

try to sleep, that way you have no idea when you are over ocean or land...I also always bring a book to read, crosswords, and an MP3 to keep my mind off of stuff, and if you are listening to music, you won't be able to hear all of the scary noises...
If you have someone with you, try playing a few games of cards to pass the time... |

Plan on enjoying your destination, that's how.
Plane trips are very hard on your skin and sinuses---if possible, bring cough drops, vapo-rub, and moisturizer.
Just ignore what MIGHT happen, and concentrate on the adventure of the trip, and how you will brag to others later about it.
Get guidebooks and read them on the plane.
Take a journal to write in about things you'll do, save a really great book to read on the plane, take postcards along to write during the flight, etc.
"Zone Out" the plane noises and distractions. |

Something I learned to do years ago was to visualize myself walking OFF of the plane just as I was walking ONTO the plane. The one time I couldn't get a clear picture of walking off the plane, I got off the flight... and it crashed about an hour after takeoff.
If you can visualize yourself walking off the plane at your destination... then you have nothing to worry about... enjoy the filght. |
