Tips for flying on my own first time? |
I'm flying on my own for the first time tomorrow, I'm 14. The flight will only last 2 hours, and I'm going to Portugal.
I'm quite nervous, but I'm not a nervous flyer or anything. I was going to fly Unaccompanied Minor but they do not do it on the airline I am flying on. So I have to find my gate and everything by myself.
Do any of you have any tips for flying on my own? How do I keep myself occupied? How do I ignore strangers and everything? What other advice would you give? |

Don't be anxious ... you will be fine.
Airports are very-well marked ... there are signs everywhere, arrows, etc. Really, it's almost impossible to get lost.
If you're unsure of anything, you can ask anyone at any check-in counter, or anyone wearing an airport-employee uniform. There are also plenty of security guards around ... they'll be happy to help you.
When you get to your departure gate, there will be someone from your airline at the stand there. Go up and let that person know you're there ... they may ask to see your boarding pass and ID. Then you just sit and wait until your flight is called. You'll be told how to board the plane. It's done by seat number, and most flights board passengers with seats in the rear first.
Since you've flown before, you're already familiar with those procedures. But it can be a little nerve-wracking to do it on your own for the first time!
Once you're on the plane (even though you're not technically an Unaccompanied Minor), the crew WILL keep an eye on you, and make sure that you're OK and have everything you need.
Bring along a book or magazine, MP3 player, etc. You can look "busy" if you want to avoid talking to strangers, both in the airport or on board your flight. It doesn't hurt to make a little small-talk with people in the seats beside you if you wish to, but you're not expected to if you'd rather not.
Once your plane lands, you'll exit the plane in reverse order of how you boarded ... front passengers off first, then those farther back. Then you just follow the signs to the baggage-claim area (if you have checked baggage) and find the carousel that will be bringing your flight's bags in ... again, this will be clearly marked.
If someone is meeting your flight, you should have a pre-arranged meeting place ... the baggage-claim area is a good one, or some other place agreed upon ahead of time. Again, if you have any trouble or don't know where you are, ASK someone who works there.
Just one tip ... if you DO have checked baggage, be sure to put something brightly-colored and easily-recognizable on your bag ... a bright pink, lime green, or yellow ribbon or ID tag ... you'd be amazed at how alike all those bags can look when they come around on the baggage carousel!
Have fun and enjoy your trip! |

It's quite understandable that you're nervous. I traveled all by myself last year as a young teen. I was freaked out. I didn't know whether or not I would handle getting through the gigantic airport without my parents. It was so much easier than I thought. The gates are clearly labeled and once I got on the plane, I couldn't believe that I had worried so much about nothing. My flight was about 9 hours. I had a bunch of magazines with me, my ipod, and I was sitting next to a guy me age. We talked most of the way. Everyone's flying experiences are different, however, I don't think you should be stressing. Have fun on your trip! |

It is only 2 hours, you'll be fine! :)
Just bring a book and a music player to keep your self occupied. |

I hope you're meeting someone over there !
But, just make sure and get there an hour early to get your luggage in and so you can go through customs and security and all that. If you can't seem to find your gate, just ask a nearby worker and they will definitely point you in the right direction. Once you get on and find your seat you will be fine from there ! I would suggest taking a few magazines you like to read, your ipod or mp3 player, a book, a coloring book, or a hand-held game. Best of luck and I know you will be fine ! |

well listen to your mp3 player or ipod.
people won't bother you if your listening to something.
and watch tv.
or don't sleep that whole night an sleep on the plain.
and if you don't sleeping on plains then bring a book and read.
or watch the t.v
most plains have a t.v :D
hope i helped. |

Since it's only going to be a 2 hour flight you don't have much to worry much.
Remember:
-to arrive at the airport early (~2 hours)
-remove any metal on you and place it in the bin
-the 3 oz of liquid rule!
-once you get past security, go check where your gate is and THEN shop or do whatever it is you like
-be nice!
-dress comfortably
-don't wear makeup (if you have to, don't wear too much)
-if your lost, ask the people who work at the airport. Better yet ask the people who work for your airline
-people might ask you where your parents are or why your travelling alone. If you don't want to answer them just smile and walk away! (don't snap at them!)
-don't lean all the way back on the airport seat of kick the seat in front of you. It's very disrespectful and you certainly don't want that to happen to you.
-keep your bag close to you. Don't let anyone see your passport (unless they are airport official or security)
-when your at the security metal detector, don't let your bag go through first before you do. If you do, there's that chance where someone in front of you might take off with it.
-be aware of your surround, watch your luggage and bag at all times. do NOT take your eyes off of it
Most importantly:
ENJOY YOUR FLIGHT AND TRIP!

be strong. you can figure the things out. Just make sure you ask the employees there for help when you need it. but its really straight forward as to how to find your terminal. Just follow the signs.
you can buy magazines or books to keep yourself occupied. Don't listen to your Ipod when you get to your terminal just in case they announce something important. So make sure you keep your ears open.
Or either you can sit right next to the gate to make sure you know things right away. How do you ignore strangers? you just do. Just smile and then answer them quickly. If they keep persisting then just walk away. |

Get a window seat and stare out of it for awhile. Then once the plane gets going, plug the headphones in that they give you and listen to some music. When the stewardess goes around to give you peanuts, be careful when you open them! |

First of all tell the person at the counter when you check in that you have never flown alone. Ask if you can get one of those people with the rides to take you to your gate.
Being it is a 2 hr flight you will not have anything to worry about as far as being bored. Look at a magazine or something, by then the lady with the coke and peanuts will be coming by to serve you. I don't really recommend taking music to listen to. You may miss an important announcement.
Best of Luck |

yes if u r lost ask staff to help you find ur way and just listen to the announcers and focus on the signs |

Don't be nervous. Just be confident and ask an airline employee if you have any questions. I'm sure they will be quite helpful. Just bring something to occupy your time such as a laptop, iPod, book, etc.
Don't worry about strangers. They don't want to bother with you in the same way you don't want to bother with them. And airports are very safe places and are staffed with a plethora of security and police officers.
Enjoy your flight and enjoy wherever it is you're going. |
