Continental. On both UA and CO you will get free meal flying transatlantic. (Actually CO feeds you on their US domestic flights too). If you are an elite frequent flyer with UA, then you should go with UA to get the premium seats. If not, then go with Continental. The non-premium seats on UA have been made extremely tight, to create extra room for the premiums. Continental regular seats are normal.

Go with Continental, Nice in flight meals, and movies during your flight. Also one of the safest airlines in the world.

I am a Continental fan based on their excellent customer service so I would go with them for a long haul flight.

Absolutely go with Continental. United is the worst US carrier by far, and Continental is one of the better. (Still not as good as Virgin Atlantic but they obviously don't have as many connections to US cities). Both CO and UA serve free meals on transatlantic flights but I wouldn't trust United to even be sanitary, they're that bad. (I have so many horror stories but you probably don't even want to know). Not sure about transatlantic flights I believe they have TVs on some of their planes - they probably have more info. on their website. But Continental is absolutely one of the best US airlines. The only bad thing about Continental is they probably go through Newark which isn't the best airport, but it's better than Washington or even Chicago which are United's main transatlantic hubs.

if you want you can check there,

If you know the plane type, you can get valuable infos and tips.

I would choose BA or Virgin if I were you.

British Airways, Continental, United - in that order.

For leg room in cattle class, chose American Airlines - but not for anything else - food not overly good and you have to pay for booze - and the films are not exactly the most recent. Depends on whether you want a bit more space or better creature comforts!
However, check out Maxjet - travelled with them business class for only £200 more than economy - and had two fabulous flights - loads of room, great service, wonderful food, free flowing booze, and lounges at each airport.

I flew with united last year and they were fantastic, the meals were yum and if you have kids you can pre book a kids meal they have seats in the headrests aswell and loads of channels to watch, for £5 you can get some headphones which you can used on all their flights with tv etc...we missed our connecting flight and it was their fault so they put us up at the hilton in boston and gave us vouchers for food!!! they were great.

Assume most of the other answers are from Americans.

Virgin has to be the best - from a brit!
