Turbulence? Is it dangerous?

I'm going to be in the air for 8-9 hours, and I'm so scared of flying. I'm going to be making a stop in Florida and I feel like there's going to be alot of turbulence because of Hurricane season and because it's probally rainging in different states or so...

Is it safe or dangerous? Because also I have been on a plane and at times it feels like it goes down a hole because my heat goes but like going down a roller coaster.....

Turbulence is not normally dangerous. It is caused by the uneven heating of the earth so that air rises more over open land than over forest areas. Also, it keeps the pilot awake so that is one thing you don't have to worry about. Was a pilot most of my life and it is by far the safest way to travel.~

Planes are deliberately built to withstand very high degrees of turbulence. I agree that it can be scary; it used to terrify me. But pilots are well trained in handling it, and even when a plane has dropped markedly they know how to pull out of the situation. They are often notified before encountering these up and down drafts, and so will announce it in an effort to calm passengers. Be of good cheer. You're safer in the air than on the ground, believe me.

Ok, so the science behind turbulence is that it is actually hot air rising from the ground or the warm air from a storm rising and your plane happens to be flying through it, so naturally it is going to bump up and down. Thus the sensation of turbulence. In some situations it can be dangerous but not how you think. For instance, if you aren't wearing your seat belt and you are going through a heavy turbulence patch, the plane may jolt you upwards hard enough that you would hit your head on an over head compartment, or fall over and hit it on something else. So really it would be your own fault rather than turbulence if you got hurt, because you weren't wearing your seat belt.

Turbulence can be dangerous. It depeds how bad it is, but don't worry, the pilots know how to keep everyone safe, no matter how bad the weather is. I've been on many planes with turbulence since I was baby, turbulence is almost normal to happen on plane rides.

Some times turbulence sometimes can be dangerous that is why the captain put on the fasten seat belt sign.

You must be traveling far to be flying for 8-9 hours... Lucky you! If you're not used to flying this can be a daunting situation, but trust me, the destination is well worth it. Here are a few suggestions to make your flight a bit more enjoyable:

#1 Make sure that you have lots to occupy yourself with... One issue of Cosmo probably isn't going to cut it, so stock up on sodoku puzzle books, a good book and maybe a journal (you could also use this once on your trip leaving space to insert photos and everything).

#2 Make yourself comfortable... Get one of those neck pillows and maybe a sleep mask so that you can take quick naps. Though they dim the lights during nighttime flying, shorter naps can help tons with jetlag.

#3 Look into taking an over-the-counter motion sickness or sleep aid to relax yourself while in flight. I used to get sick on every single trip, but now that I've grown out of it, I still take Dramamine so I won't be overly anxious on any flight. If you're extra concerned, talk to your doctor about other options.

#4 Don't worry about turbulence, don't even think about it... That feeling you get, like going down a steep hill on a rollercoaster, is normal when the plane hits an airpocket. And just because you'll be traveling during hurricaine season doesn't necessarily mean that there will be lots of turbulence. You'll only notice additional turbulence if there is a hurricaine coming into, or going out of, the area. If there's any real danger they'll land the plane.

Hope this info helps; have a great trip!

All the previous answers are really good. Turbulence is really nothing to worry about. I travel by plane once or twice a week, and encounter significant turbulence maybe every couple of months, there is usually always a couple of bumps here and there on every flight, but those are very minor.

When in your seat keep your seatbelt on, otherwise just follow the advice already given by the other folks. You'll be just fine.

just think of them as pot holes in the air. im super scared to fly and when i think of it that way it doesnt bother me as much. Either that or just get a shot of tequilla right before you take off and you will be fine! :)

Turbulence are unavoidable during air travel. Dont be so scared. I travel 15 hrs non-stop from Delhi to Chicago- I scared initially but not now. Just sleep while you travel that will be better.

my grand pa travels every single day thats why he has 2 passports full of stamps so he had to get a new one....anyways i got into a huge turbulance once that made the plane almost roll 360 but only went 180 but it went 180 5 -12 times ....please refer to this story of mines.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnxzbJesqy6SpbEJMHLM_Ezty6IX?qid=20070706213659AAEFUmj&show=7#profile-info-nq6l4aBdaa

Normally the only danger that you have during turbulence is if you don't have your seat belt on or someone else does not have theirs on and falls on you.
