As of a year, the 12 month passport is alive and well and in fact it's been growing in usage. I assume it is still alive and well to this day.
The 12 month passport has been most commonly used in the case of a lost or stolen passport. When traveling abroad, the 12 month passport can be issued in a single day and serves as a stop gap measure when someone has lost their passport. Instead of issuing a full length passport that can take a few weeks, they will issue the one year passport.
The 12 month passport can also be used when handling replacement or renewal passports abroad when the embassy feels justified.
One thing to note, the passport isn't issued for revenue enhancement reasons. The 12 month passport costs the same, but when it comes time to renew it into a full 10 year passport, no extra fee is collected. |

Yes, there was a 12 month passport that was available alongside the 10 year one -
The British Visitor's Passport, was introduced in 1961, and was a single page cardboard document valid for a year and obtainable from a Post Office. It was recognised by most West European countries, but was dropped in 1995 since it did not identify the holder's nationality nor did it meet new security standards. |

Straight from the UK passport agency's website

I never had a (12 month) British visitors passport myself although I remember mum & dad having one. I'm not surprised they were phased out. Any tom dick or harry could have forged one with ease on their kitchen table with a piece of card and pack of crayons. It wasn't a very sophisticated document. If I remember correctly you could have one issued on the day at a main post office with minimal identity and security checks. |

Yes there was , You could could get them in the Post Office so you could travel at short notice if you didn't have a full one. It also saved you having to be embarrassed by your old photo as years went by (vanity) |

You can still get one under special circumstances.
I had to send off my passport when I applied for a visa, but had to travel abroad at the same time. I was then issued a 12-month passport and ended up owning two valid passports for a year. (Not to be recommended though. You get questioned A LOT by customs) |

Yes, you could buy it over the counter at the Post Office.
Think it ended in the late 80's or early 90's. |

Yes there wa a 12 month passport, and in my life time, but the Government saw the way to a quick profit, and introduced the 10 year one.
I think it was stopped in 1992 |
