Ways to ease your mind while in flight?

I am claustrophobic and can't get my head around flying on planes. I'm flying a few times over this summer, in about two months. I'm 19. Since I'm flying alone my mom doesn't want me to have Valium because I would be more vulnerable as a lone-traveling-female. She says my issues are just mental and I can prepare myself for these flights. I would really like any advice form anyone. I can only really concentrate when there is no sounds at all. So reading probably wouldn't be the best thing for me. Also if anyone had stats on planes and flying that would also be helpful. Thanks to all :D

If your claustrophobic try sitting in small area's to get used to the confines of a jumbo jet. Also you could simply where ear plugs to reduce the noise and then try to sleep most of the flight. Honestly it's not that bad on these planes, there is room to walk and stretch your legs and the views are spectacular at 30000+ feet high. Don't take any drugs before you fly as you won't need them. Much better to accept the fact that you have to fly a bit then to stress out over it. Your mind is the most powerful tool we have and it is currently giving you doubts because it doesn't know any better. When you actually try to enjoy this opportunity you will be ten times more at ease with the whole idea of flying and realise that you were worrying for nothing. As for stats you are far more likely to have an automobile crash on the way to the airport than having any problems with your flight crashing. Remember don't stress out about it, accept it and enjoy it.

Valium doesn't make you vulnerable, and the world isn't that dangerous to begin with.

A doctor can prescribe Xanax for you, or some other anxiolytic, which will help you stay calm without being "vulnerable."

The chances of you dying in an airline crash in the U.S. are about one in 37,000,000.

I know just how you feel, I hate flying too. But I usually like listen to music and just close my eyes and take a nap. I always keep my window shut, and I always try to get a middle or aisle seat. I find myself not thinking about the flight when I'm doing these things. I just try to relax.

breathe deeply, close your eyes, and bring noise canceling headphones to listen to songs on your ipod. if that doesn't work, request a window seat and stare out the window

DEFFINATLEY bring an ipod just b/c they're rad, NO books, you will lose your mind if you even attempt to read ittie-bittie words! OH naps are good too =)

btw, im a girl too :D haha and my mom wouldnt let me take anything for the same reason, just try and relax you'll be fine!!!!

Most flights have movies and music you can listen to. I think you can get tablets that would help you aswell? You just need to do anything to plug up your ears cause planes can be alittle noisy. Maybe think about ear plugs even if your not sleeping, Also take some cards or something and just play around with them. Just any game to keep your mind busy

You should just bring an i-pod or something to distract yourself.
My mom is really afraid of planes and she'll just take a tylenol.
or maybe buy ear plugs and just read or do a puzzle or something while on the flight. it's really not going to be that bad alone. and its always good to make conversation with thee person next to you. it makes the time go by faster and you won't worry as much. hope that was a help sweetie.

you should try reading, or you could listen to your ipod, eat to keep your mind off of things, bring a something like a D.S, go to sleep, if you like to knit you could go something like that, you know, sewing, knitting....
you can watch the movies they have on the plane, you could draw or write
good luck:)
btw i love flying on planes!

I remember when I was 18 years old and flying for the first time away for college. I was afraid of being on an air plane for a long period of time and miles high up in the air. To get over my fear of long distant flying and being clautorphobia, I avoided barrying my face in a book, wrapped my head phones around my ears and relaxed my mind to the sounds of my favorite R&B/ hip-hop songs. It worked for me!
