It would be John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), located the Queens area of New York City. It's a hub for American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta and a secondary hun for British Airways.
In terms of total passenger traffic, John F. Kennedy ranks at number 18 of the world's busiest airport passenger traffic.
In terms of International passenger traffic, John F. Kennedy ranks at number 17 of the world's busiest airports in terms of international passenger traffic.
In terms of cargo traffic, John F. Kennedy ranks at number 14 of the world's busiest airports in terms of cargo traffic.
See the Wikipedia article on 'World's busiest airport':
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_busiest_airport
In 2005 JFK airport handled 41 million passengers
JFK's outbound international travel accounted for 17% of all U.S. travelers in 2004.
After JFK, the most popular world be Newark Liberty International Airport followed by New York LaGuardia International airport.

JFK is the busiest. I don't think that makes it popular though, that only makes it big. The airport I like the most in Colorado (I haven't seen them all) is Grand Junction, CO for pilots and Denver if you are in the military because the USO is there. |

If by "popular" you mean the most passengers use it, then it's JFK.
And to the person who said that Reagan National Airport in DC is the most popular airport in the country "because it's huge": Actually for a significant airport, it's quite small. I fly on average 2-3 times a month and have been to dozens of (over 100) airports in the US and world. And I'm from DC originally so I fly there a lot. Reagan National is the smallest of the 3 airports in the DC area. And according to the FAA, it's the 29th busiest airport in the United States. That said, I always try and fly into that airport because it's by far the most convienient way to get into DC. But it's absolutely not the biggest. |

LaGuardia may edge out Kennedy
I'm wrong.

In 2005:
7 JFK-New York (JFK) 41,885,104
22 LaGuardia-New York (LGA) 26,671,787
most passenger traffic in the nation is:
1 Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL) 85,907,423
2 Chicago O'Hare (ORD) 76,510,003
Total Passengers: arriving + departing passengers + direct transit passengers counted once. |

LaGuardia in NYC.
FYI: Most popular in the USA would be Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. because it's huge. |
