What are the major airlines?

I'm trying to plan a last minute trip to somewhere cheap. I've looked at a few airline sites, like United and American Airlines and checked their deals. Does anyone know any other major ailine site that may list deals? I don't want to have to type in a destination, we think it would be cool just to pick a place on the "cheap" list and go.

The three majors in the US are American, United and Delta. Farther down the list in no particular order are Northwest, Southwest and Continental. I don't think US Air exists as an independent entity anymore, I believe they merged with United.

Airlines and major hubs:
American: Dallas, Chicago and Miami
United: Chicago, Denver and San Francisco
Delta: Atlanta and Cincinnati
Northwest: Minneapolis/St. Paul and Detroit
Southwest: Based in Dallas, does not go to all major airports
Continental: Houston and Cleveland

There are other regional carries also like America West, Alaska Airlines and Jet Blue.

Not sure where you live, maybe your hometown airline has a cheap last minute deal.

You could also try Northwest. They sometimes have really good deals.

One of the best sites for this is airfarewatchdog.com and they list all of the airlines, such as Southwest and JetBlue, where as Expedia and Priceline will only offer you major airlines. You can also subscribe to the daily airfarewatchdog.com newsletter.

Air Tran
Spirit Airlines ( great fares to FL and the caribbean)
Southwest ( if you book in advance)

Or check:

Angela, travel is changing to where people aren't going to get "cheap" deals like in the past. They are running fewer flights worldwide and this plays with the supply and demand. To get better prices you will need to start to learn to plan in advance if you are able to.

I think it is about time they start to change this around for people that plan in advance should get the better prices instead of last min. Don't take offence to that please, but I think you know what it is I am saying.

Unfortunately the airlines because they allowed there remaining seats to go discounted to "fill them up" per say it began a rush for more people to wait last min. Thus causing airlines to go into bankruptcy from not only not making a profit, but losing money. This of course is the airlines fault, not consumers. I think it was just something that the airlines hadn't foreseen.

So you will see major increases in prices now in the future and believe me it isn't all about "fuel" costs as some consumers might think it is.

Vegas is a perfect example, it has gone up in price and again this isn't a phase to if you wait long enough it will go down. They are slowly making a stand that no longer will it be like the past. Every time everyone gets that "really cheap deal that is almost too good to be true" the airline goes further and further into bankruptcy. They have to restructure to try and pull themselves out of it.

Best of luck to you, but seriously though please try to plan in advance it will be in your best interest.

I would try orbitz and travelocity before the airlines. Then try Southwest, Jet Blue and Airtran depending on where you live and where you are going to.

DELTA ? SOUTHWEST

Dubs82
Checkout Southwest... but also all the travel sites like expedia, travelocity, orbitz, etc... they usually have cheaper flights than the airlines directly sell.

bradthepilot
Southwest is usually cheaper than others.
