I must have caught at least 100 flights over the last several years. In that time, I have only had problems with my baggage once - I had to change onto a connecting flight but my baggage did not make the connecting flight. It did, however, arrive the following day.
In all the years I have been travelling, there has only been one other instance where someone I know did not arrive with their baggage. However, again, the airline arranged for delivery of their baggage the following day. Similarly, this person has flown lots of times but has only 'lost' his baggage one.
The airlines losing baggage does happen but it happens rarely. The rare occasion I have seen it happen personally, it was due to the baggage missing the connecting flight. The passenger was also reunited with their baggage the following day.
It is unlikely you will lose you bag when flying. The airlines will tag your bag with a label to identify it as yours. However, do make sure you place an identifying mark on your bag. It will make it easier for the airline to verify its your bag when it's retrieved. |

The baggage hold of the aircraft is well secured when flying so not much chance! Bags usually get mis-directed on the ground whilst in transit from the check-in desk to the aircraft and end up going onto the wrong plane and wrong destination or even fall off the conveyors or trolleys taking them to or from the aircraft. |

Depends on which airline, and your travel route.
For example, if you are flying from Denver to Chicago nonstop and on Delta, I'd say very little.
If you are flying from Denver to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with change of planes in Salt Lake City, Detroit, Newark and Atlanta, and you're flying United Airlines, I'd say you have a 99.98% chance that your bag will end up in Fresno. Or Anchorage.
If you actually need a specific number, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation might have the data that you are looking for. |

I don't know what the exact odds are, but last time I flew, there were 5 of us in the party and MY bag got left in Spain with those of another 6 passengers.
It was delivered to me 36 hours after I'd landed.
Lucky I was on my way home not just arriving on holls. |

I've lost mine twice - once flying from London to LA (but it turned up a couple of hours later) and once flying into St. Thomas from Puerto Rico; that one came in on the next plane, too.
I always carry a small toilet kit and a couple of pairs of knickers in my hand-baggage.
I've had my suitcase damaged beyond repair twice, too; the first time at Athens airport the second time between New Zealand's South and North Islands. |

on an normal day about 4 in every 1000 bags get mishandled. alot has to do also with where to are flying from and where you are going to, how many time you have to change planes or airlines and the amount of time you have to get from 1 flight to another. I work for a major airline in a hub.. alot of times the bag makes it to the flight before the passanger does when there is a short connect time. So, I would say the you will have a good chace of having your bag when you get to your final destination. Just a reminder. remove the batteries from all toys. |

If your journey involved a single flight, it's not likely they'll go missing.
However, if your journey contains 2 or more connecting flights it's slightly more likely, especially if there's only a short time between one flight landing and the other departing. With that said, it happens only rarely. |

Most bags are delivered without any problems. However you must realize that all bags do not necessarily travel on the same plane as the passengers. Some go by cargo plane and do arrive before the passengers do. |

Generally the issue is if the bag gets on the plane at the departure city. Often TSA baggage screening is the issue. Then any connections increase the odds. That is why I usually do carry-on only (I am good at packing but that is another topic, 3 oz etc)
Solution: Always put a fresh shirt/blouse, change of underwear, fresh socks in your handbag/small carry on. Your hotel will provide an iron. (Makeup if you are an ugly chick) Your hotel will always provide a toothbrush, soap, shampoo, razor etc unless it is a real cheap place, then carry that on too |
