What are the reasons that someone would fly Stand-by?

Flying standby isn't the same as it used to be--- it used to be you could go to the airport without a ticket and see if there was space on the plane and, if so, usually get a cheap price. But you can't get near the gates any more without a ticket and any tickets you purchase on the day of departure are hideoulsy expensive.

So the only two practical reasons for flying standby are:
-Trying to catch an earlier flight, like if I have a 7pm flight but finish up with my customer at 2pm, I might try to go home early by standing by for the 5pm flight
-Missed a flight and trying to get to destination. Flight may have been delayed or cancelled, or I might just not have shown up in time.

Usually if staff of airline companies, or members of their families, are granted free or reduced-fare tickets, they will travel stand-by. All passengers will be given priority over them and if not seat is available on the day they are scheduled to fly, they will have to wait for the next available plane, on which they will still be on stand-by.

last minute travel plans,to save money, flexible departure time(willing to wait if need be to save money), also, if you have employee vouchers

Mostly to save money - if you got a discounted ticket through either a great sale or through employee discounts. Also - if you need a flight somewhere on short notice you may be able to buy tickets on stand by in hopes of getting on a flight due to no shows.

Usually if they need to get on a flight last minute or they miss their flight. A lot of airline personnel will fly stand by to get home.

well it costs alot less but the bad part of flying stand by is that you might not get on.

1) The sheriff is in the parking lot and looking for you hard.

2) Your ex promised to maim you badly if he/she ever saw you again.

3) You lost the golf match a couple of hours ago and told the guy you lost to that you're going home to pick up the $10,000.00 that you owe him. And his name is Tony Sprano.

These are just a couple - as you can see, the subject didn't have time to arrange for a timely flight. He just has to take the next thing 'smokin' out of there - this is called "stand-by".

If they waited until the last minute to buy a ticket and that was all that was available?
