What are the rules about liquids and gels on U.S. flights now?

I am flying tomorrow (December 23), from PA to AL, and I don't know if I can bring liquid bath products at all. If I can bring them, do I have to check them, or can I carry them on board?

Lady K
on baggage restrictions for flights from/within the U.S.

Liquids, gels and/or aerosols are now permitted through security checkpoints. Items must fit in one clear, re-sealable quart or liter-sized plastic bag, in containers of 3oz/90ml or less.

Examples include: shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, hair spray, liquid cosmetics and other items of similar consistency.

Plastic bags must be completely sealed and will be x-rayed at the security checkpoint separately.

The following items are allowed, but must be presented to TSA officials at security checkpoints if they are not contained in clear plastic bags or are of greater volume than 3oz/90ml:

Baby formula/milk, including breast milk, and baby food in containers if a baby or small child is traveling.
Medications (liquid, gel or aerosol)
Liquids, juices or gels for diabetic passengers who indicate a need for such items to address their medical condition. (A letter from your physician is not necessary).
Boarding area restrictions waived

Passengers are now permitted to take liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased in the boarding area onboard the aircraft. This includes all duty free items.

Was the last I heard on the matter.... I flew in october, so it could have changed from then.

I just flew to New York and the rules were:
1. All liquids and gels must be 3 ounces or less
2. Put all liquids and gels in a sandwich size bag
3. Items must fit comfortably
If you are checking your luggage you may bring larger than 3 oz. liquids and you dont have to do the sandwich bag thing

momtojt
you can take up to 3oz of liquid or gel which is a travel size bottle.
All products must fit into a quart size ziploc bag. If you bring 3oz of shampoo, 3 oz of conditioner, 3oz of toothpaste, and cosmetics, just make sure that the ziploc can close.

Good Morning,

Well I work for TSA... plan and simple-- I suggest that you check your bags with your airline. You can carry travel size liquids such as toothpaste, shaving creams, and lotions if the label says that the size is 3.4 oz or less. Finally if you decide to carry those travel size liquids with you, make sure they are in a quart size zip lock type bag

Meo
must be under 100ml, not to exceed 1l total (you can have 10 items of 100ml)

They have to be in small bottles.. the airlines say 3 ounces or less. However, no one will be weighing it or measuring it to exact amounts. Just make sure they are travel size. And they have to be in a clear bag, like a ziplock bag. As long as you follw those rules you can bring whatever liquds you want on board.

These two sites should be able to tell you everything you need to know: http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2003583_pack-holiday-travel.html

"They have to be in small bottles.. the airlines say 3 ounces or less. However, no one will be weighing it or measuring it to exact amounts." This made me shake my head in awe. It's 3 fluid ounces, not 3 dry weight ounces. They don't weigh fluid ounces - it's a volume measurement.

To be sure, check the http://www.tsa.gov website. This will tell you all precautions you need to take (it's not a gallon sized bag as mentioned here) and it will be from the horses mouth, not a bunch of morons on answers.

Also, this question has now been asked 3 times in the last hour. Next time, try using the search box near the top of the page to search for past answers and questions. It's a great way to get advice without having to ask a question.

www.tsa.gov

This is the official and current resource for restrictions on all things related to air travel.

All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

I wish people would quit telling flight schedules on here. Do you realize it is a security risk. But to eliminate any doubt travel light, and buy when you arrive.
