What are your recommendations on fear of flying?

i used to love flying, that was up until last year! i have never had a fear of flying, and have always quite enjoyed it, but last year when flying back from the dominican rebublic we went through some really bad turbulence. the plane shook so bad that we were almost lifted off our seats! i know that the safest way to travel is by air(apparently!) but this experience has frightened me and put me off flying. i love going abroad to sunny places, but dont want any future holidays spoiled by the fact that all i am thinking about is the flight there and back. is there anything i can take(medication wise) that will calm me a little? or what do you reccomend i can do to overcome this and make this easier. my husband loves to go abroad too, and neither of us particularly wants to stay in the country for our holidays. any advice? thank you in advance.

Same here. We seem to be in good company! I have been flying around Europe since I was 2 but one bad flight at 17 has made me terrified. I tried it again at 21 but I was so sick the whole time then spent my holiday worrying about the flight home. its just not worth it...Now its car or train for me!

One of two ideas, first why not try a cruise that way you still get to go abroad, or why not try flying lessons to help you get over this fear.

CaptainRowdy
Turbulence is only annoying when they have to stop serving drinks. Think of it as a roller coaster ride. That and lots of Bloody Mary's.

My family goes on many holidays abroad because we are expats living in Asia. Because of this i have never had a fear of flying, but one of my best friends does. Whenever she goes on a plane she brings a gaurdian angel and she has to hold someones hand and stuff like that. But then one time when we were on a plane for a school trip, all she did was take out her book and read it. Before she knew it we were landing the plane and she hadn't even really noticed! My point is that if you listen to music or read a book to take your mind off the plane ride you should be fine. If you are worried about weather, you could try looking up the weather forecast for the day of your flight in advance, so you aren't caught unexpected! Hope this helps :) mikeyxx

try some dramamine (sorry the spelling is not so good) it helps with motion sickness and helps with the nervousness and shouldnt make you drowsy but I would check the box to make sure.

tackle it head on and go for a flight in a single engined plane.

1) Do your math, it is about a 1- 40,000 chance that a commercial jet could take a life, cars, trains etc.. are more dangerous, in fact even walking down the side walk is of more danger than a commercial jet 2) take a short flight some place or even a small plane to get over it 3) commercial jets can fly with 1 engine and even glide with none 4) check for stormy weather before you go

It's true, the roller coaster idea works for me. I've flown international many times and the one time I flew domestic it was the worst flight ever! A lot of praying on that flight! Luckily for me I still had to switch planes to get home. Just gotta get back in there. Not all flights are like that. Remember the good ones. And sleep as much as possible!

to avoid bad turbulence...try and book seats that are leveled with the wings. You will find it will be felt the least.... the further you are from the centre of gravity of the plane, the more you are affected by turbulence, so seats at the rear or front of the cabin will be more affected than those that are level with the wings :-)

I don't think medication is the answer. You can go on a course to combat fear of flying. I think British Airways runs them. It's a case of mind over matter really.

rainydaze
If your flying is occasional, go to your doctor, ask for xanex, its for anxiety and panic disorders. It will calm you tremendously.

medication isnt the answer. your not stopping the problem. if you want to go on holiday abroad then tell yourself you are going on holiday. make sure your husband doesnt stop you going on holiday, keep him talking you into it. if there wasnt a problem to start with then why should there be now because of some turbulence, its not at all dangerous!

oh my god Im the same I used to love it until in a really awful flight! I take herbal stuff but to be honest I think you just have to try and talk yourself into it being ok. You can go on one of those flight lessons that are for people that are really scared of flying. You have to get used to it cos there are so many beautiful places to see

I know it's been said before but air travel IS more safe than road travel it's just that you're less accostomed to it than the road so anything that's unexpected will make it scarier - a bit like learning to ride a bike and falling off - you've just got to get back on when you fall off. I think that's the best advice.

The only thing that works for me are 2 or 3 stiff drinks.

Before you start spending your hard earned wonga on 'cures', I strongly recommend you first approach your own GP. I say this because most NHS-Trusts have a department where patients can get councelling for various problems including phobias etc.

Remember, you are not NUTS, you have a fear of flying and this is perfectly normal - we don't have wings - and this means we've got to put our trust in someone else, the pilot.

Look, don't want to scare you right, but when you view this, I just know it will make you laff : -
