Dolls Have Feelings Too!

What can I take to help me sleep through a flight?

I've been asking friends and family, but didn't think til now to ask here!

Tonight, I'm taking a 5-hour red eye flight from Seattle to Philadelphia. It's going to be around the time I usually go to sleep, 10:30pm.
Last time I was on an airplane, however, there was some major turbulance, and the plane turned itself sideways at an almost dangerous angle. Understandably, since then, I've been a little nervous about flying again.
I know statistically there's almost no chance of anything happening...but I'd be much happier if I could sleep through the entire thing.
(As a note, even when sleeping in my own bed, I usually tend to wake up a couple times during the night.)

I've been suggested Excedrin PM, Nyquil, and taking a couple shots.

Does anyone have any tried and true methods?
I need to be able to wake up after 5 hours, too, to get off the plane and make my connecting flight. I am travelling with my fiance, so if it's necessary that I be woken up, he can do that.

Thank you so much in advance for your help!
Additional Details
I have allergies and take antihistamines regularly, so benadryl is pretty much a sugar pill to me. ;)

Valium is a prescription med, but it works well for this sort of thing.

I'm a big fan of benadryll. Take two at boarding time and that tends to put me over the edge for sleep. I'd recommend 2 benadryll and a shot of your favorite booze (wine, beer too) to really get you into oblivion land to sleep at first.

But bear in mind that in turbulence, and given your nervousness, probably nothing is going to get you to sleep, at least not well.

Taking any of the drugs you mention is fine, but don't use the alcohol.

Booze on an aircraft at altitude can have strange effects on some people. It might make you hyperactive and that is really not what you want to be on an aircraft.

dramomine (not exactly sure how to spell it) is used for motion sickness but often makes people tired as well.

Go to a drug store and by melatonin, its a herbal, approved, over the counter supplement that helps induces sleep.

Gaia Herbs offers a natural Tincture called Serenity that will calm your nerves in about 5 minutes. Instead of making you sleep, it takes away the anxiety so you are able to drift to sleep naturally if need be. :-)

Unisom is an over the counter sleep aid that works really well, especially if you havent used it before and have built up any tolerance to it. Take it about 1 hour before your flights scheduled departmure. It also might help to have a glass of wine to take the edge off before you fly! I would discourage doing shots before a flight becuase you may feel quite ill if you even slightly over do it. Have a great flight!

nyquil or maybe benadryl

Mike
I usually take benadryl ( or however you spell it) and start long slow breathing which is known to make you relax.

well i think just close your eyes and after a while maybe you will able to sleep. ..sometimes if you will take medicine maybe you will become more dependent on it. So just practice your self to sleep without any medication
