What clothing to wear through airport security? |
Im travelling to the USA from the UK in the next couple of weeks and have just read the TSA guidelines on appropriate clothing to wear.....it says try not to wear any metal etc, which is fine as i can take my wedding ring off etc, but the trouble is the clothes i had already decided on are a pair of combat trousers (with a metal button and 3 zips on) and it advises not to wear underwired bras!
Surely i can still wear these things, i know i will probably set the alarm off....but then what?
I know this sounds a really stupid question, but im travelling with my husband and 2 children and the last time i went abroad (before 9/11) it was so different so i guess im just fretting!
Also what is security like in the USA? i just want to know what to expect!
Thanks in advance! |

First thing is never try and joke with security - they have NO sense of humour (e.g. if you have a violin case saying you have a machine gun in it etc.)
I would recommend against Combats with lots of zips and buttons, its just not worth the hassle.
Underwired bras is normal, I would assume you will have a bag of somekind. Before you go through security put in as much metal as you have (glasses, wallet/purse, watch, coins, mobile etc.) to reduce teh amount of metal you gave on you. Wedding rig is not big enough to set it off. Also if any of you are wearing a belt with a metal buckle. Just stick it on in the bag to go through the x ray machine.
If you set the machine off, they will ask you to check youve taken everything out of yopur pockets and go through again. If you still set it off, then they will take you off to one side and either wave a wand over you to find where its setting it off and/or do a pat down search. Its takes a minute and its no hassle at all, nothing to worry about. You may or may not be asked to take your shoes off and put them through the x ray machine as well.
Liquids - dont take any liquids through security, any make up/medicines etc. ensure they are under 100ml and that you have them in a clear zip lock bag (like the ones you get in Lakelands). Note that this includes mascara, listick, lippie, etc.
If you buy Duty Frees, ensure you tell them when you buy it where you are flying to so that they will seal it in a clear bag along with the receipt and you shouldnt have any problems when you arrive in the US/UK. |

Avoid wearing a burka!
Don't worry about it, a ring doesn't set of the alarms. They may ask you to remove your watch, boots or belt, and if you still bleep they will scan you in more detail. |

God don't wear an underwire bra anyway. I got searched because of it one year and i told the female security guard what it was. "Oh" she says "they're usually made of plastic, i doubt thats what it is". So i turned to her and said "look, my boobs are a bit bigger than yours so i need metal to hoist them up ok" Turns out, i was right and she was wrong |

i'd avoid things with too many zips etc. but most likely you will set it off for something. they usually just make you empty your pockets and take off any excess jackets, shoes, etc, and scan you with a metal detector. then if you set it off with your bra, it will beep over your boobs and if its obvious nothing is hidden there they just accept it and wave you through. they are kind of nutty about things though and you arent allowed to bring bottles of water with you through security gates and you have to buy your water once past security.. |

Don't worry about your wedding ring. When you go through the metal detectors, you are asked to empty pockets and jewelry, phones, etc. into a little basket. Also they make you take off your shoes.
So wear comfortable but easily removable shoes as well as easy stuff for the kids.
The last time I flew was from Turkey (we're military) to the states and this was in Feb. 2002, so it was really very soon after 9/11 and it was a NIGHTMARE for me! I was traveling with 4 children, 2 of them in car seats because they were ages 2 and 3 and also in diapers, one also diabetic, so I had syringes, insulin, snacks, etc. Plus my oldest 2 kids who were 14 and 10 were both having bad air sickness that continued at Baltimore in the terminal. A real nightmare when we landed in Baltimore. I had NO PROBLEMS with anything until we got to Baltimore. Baltimore airport was awful! They had soldiers with guns standing around everywhere. We flew out of Turkey, had a layover in Germany, then in England and then to Baltimore and then changed planes to go to Atlanta.
Military flights were just fine, but the civilian was the nightmare.
They said we had too many bags, too much everything and had to check 6 extra bags?? It was crazy! On military flights, brief cases, purses, diaper bags and car seats do NOT count as carry ons. They even tried to count my fanny pack!! I took it off and put it in my bag. But don't you find it irritating when you have to put a diaper bag into checked baggage? It's crazy!
Just try to pack lightly, dress comfortable and good luck! |

Yes you can still wear these things as long as you are prepared to be physically searched.
My advise is not to wear anything that has metal - leave your wedding ring on as they expect that.
I personally would wear something else other than combat trousers - cause your screaming "terrorist" and they will watch you like a hawk.
It's not rocket science just relax |
