Best deals are Tue, Wed, Ths. Get on Travelzoo mailing list. They come up with specials every Wed morning. |

You will always get the best rate 14 days prior to departure day. You will reduce the price of the tickets by traveling during the week like wednesday to tuesday or thursday to wednesday. Traveling Friday, Saturday or Sunday is always more expensive. |

Good advice so far, except you will NOT always get the best price 14 days in advance--especially for (this) summer. For transatlantic, you should've booked months ago. You also risk paying way too much on US domestic tickets by waiting too long. 21 days advance used to be the general cutoff date for the cheapest advance-purchase fares, but with demand so great, those cheapest seats are selling out weeks earlier. |

Actually...its 30 days advanced purchase. Fares are broken down into 30 day, 14 day and 7 day advanced purchase. But fare sales can be released at any time and run for a day or less sometimes. The cheapest days to fly are mid-week and Saturday or book a mid-week with a Saturday night stay. Friday and Sunday are the most expensive. Sales can be released at midnight of the timezone the headquarters for that airline is in, or really at any given point in time.
I agree with signing up for Travel Zoo, its a free weekly e-mailer that gives you notice of good fare sales. Also, be careful with the travel websites, they add on booking fee's, offer rediculous schedule options and most of them lock you into the ticket and you have no ability to change it and the airline wont touch it. Sites like this include Priceline, Cheap Tickets, Hotwire, Lowestfare, Skyauction...etc. Any site that advertises as "cheap" travel. READ ALL OF THE FARE RULES.
The airlines will also send out advertisements of fare sales if you sign up on their websites or are a Frequent Flyer member. |
