What do you do to distract yourself from fear of crashing in an airplane?

I can sympathise with you!
I hate flying, it is when I see rusty rivets on the plane as you walk up the steps, it gets me every time!

Worry about crashing the car on the way to or from the airport. You have a much better chance of that happening than the plane crashing.

pull down the window shade and play video games
listen to your mp3
watch a movie

Knocking yourself out with sleeping pills is probably best for you since you are so paranoid about what you see and smell ;-)}

I had the same fear but now I fly a lot every month.

So, here's what I think: That death is the only reality of life and it will come some day for sure. I cannot escape death and so, why be scared of it? That if my airliner crashes, the airline company will pay my dependents. And, at least I will have died a happy man....not sick or handicapped, lying on the bed of some hospital, waiting for death and being a burden to my folks. By flying I've visited many countries around the world...which would not be possible if I didnt fly.

Just think of all the benefits of flying and seeing new places.

Educate yourself...learn a little about the aircraft, so the different sounds,smells etc...won't be unexpected.
Yes you may smell smoke...when the engines are started, there can be a very brief smell of fuel in the cabin.
Remember, pilots are exceedingly well trained, tested, and qualified to handle any in flight incursion that may happen.

Sit back, relax, and leave your worries on the ground. Enjoy the view of our little blue planet!

Bring an electronic game that is fairly involved or a MP3 player with your favorite book on tape or dance mix.
And finally, if you sit by the window like I finally did after gazillions of frightening plane rides, you will have a great time watching the scenery!
I was always too scared to look out and let others always get the window seat. But finally last year on a trip to Nevada I got the window seat.
It was so awesome that I soon forgot my fears and was engrossed in the landscape!

All you have to do is realize that it is much more dangerous to drive in a car than to fly in a plane. Air travel is one of the safest ways to travel today. It sounds like you are just too paranoid. Take some Dramamine and fall asleep or just realize the facts and calm down. You're gonna be fine!

carry with u a playstation portable 2 device, load ur favorite games and play them.

if u r not the gaming type, solve some sudoku or crosswords.

Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million (depending on the airline). On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000 (depending on the country). Studies have shown one would have to fly once a day every day for over 15,000 years in order to statistically be involved in an aircraft accident!

You probably won't like this answer, but my best advice is for you to get over being concerned about it. Pilots don't have death wishes, and they're very good at their jobs. As are those who maintain the planes. As a result, all other forms of transportation are far more dangerous, statistically. Bring along a magazine, and/or your camera, and enjoy the flight!
