* Swallowing activates the muscle that opens the Eustachian tube. You swallow more often when you chew gum or suck sweets, so try these, especially just before and during descent.
* Yawning is an even stronger activator of the muscles.
* Avoid sleeping during descent, because you may not be swallowing often enough to keep up with the pressure changes.
* The most forceful way to unblock your ears is to: pinch your nostrils; take in a mouthful of air; use your cheek and throat muscles to force the air into the back of your nose, as if you were trying to blow your thumb and fingers off your nostrils. You may have to repeat this several times before your ears pop.
* Decongestants shrink internal membranes and make your ears pop more easily. Ask your pharmacist for some. However, avoid making a habit of using nose sprays, because after a few days they may cause more congestion than they relieve. |

Brainygirl, chew sum gum or suck on sum hard candy. If it hurts to equalize your ears, you need to see a dr. When you use the valsalva method (pinching your nose and blow) Domt blow so hard. Blow real easy> |

do some jaw excercise and try to reduce the pressure on your ears.
Open up your jaw and slightly do some twisty movements... It works... |

If your ears are popping, that is normal. Your inner ear is equalizing the pressure to the cabin of the plane, which is at 8,000 feet. Now, on the other hand, if you are talking about an "ear-block", that is another thing. If you are having an ear block or have a tendency to have one, then take a Sudafed the night before the flight. This will open your ear passage of any troublesome mucous, thus preventing the ear block. Also, chewing gum, while on the flight will help. |

You want them to pop- that's a sign that the pressure in your ears is balancing. It's when they don't pop and you have too much pressure that causes you discomfort. My daughter and I have a lot of problem with that when landing- we take sips of water, chew gum, or suck on candy. Basically, anything that makes you swallow will help. |
