UPDATE: Although officially bmi doesn't stand for anything people believe that it stands for "British Midland" or "British Midland International".

years ago it was known as British Midland the i was never in its "public" title that was only added when the airline re-branded a few years ago.
another example is "baa" the airport owner that was known as British airport authority until it was re-branded late 80's early 90's and now all that "baa" means is "baa"
