There are alot of "dings" that occur during a flight.
The passenger seatbelt sign has a tone that sounds when the sign is turned on or off.
The flight attendant call button also sounds a tone.
The flight deck uses another set of tones to alert the flight attendants when the aircraft has passed through 10,000 feet (during take off and landing). This is when electronic devices can be used / need to be turned off.
More times than not, the flight attendants will get out of their jumpseats / strap in for landing whenever they feel it is safe. |

I think the first tone means that it is okay for stewardesses to get up and move.
Second usually means it's okay to use electronic devices.
Third, the fasten seat belt sign is unlit. |

There are 2 types of PING that people are answering here.
1 is connected with the seat belt sign and goes with a visual sign. This is for passengers in take-off, landing and any turbulance.
The ping I think the original question was about is for cabin crew and advises when they need to be strapped in/ unbuckle (usually happens a couple of minutes after take-off and a couple of minutes before landing). There may be a coloured light that goes with the noise, usually in the ceiling of the aircraft. Both types are controlled by the flight deck. |

The ping not associated with the seatbelt loght/signal overhead is to let the attendants know that it safe for them to start work. |

retracting landing gear most likely...should be followed by a small "clunk" as the wheels are locked in...... |

I think it happends when someone in the cabin pushed the button for service from the flight attendants. I know that they won't "ping" if it was for the Flight Attendants because they get off automatically after 10 minutes to 15 minutes after takeoff to start the beverage services. |

The ping just before takeoff is to notify the flight attendants that they have been cleared for take-off and to make sure they are seated and secured. The ping after take off means its ok for the flight attendants to unsecure themselves. |

To make sure all seatbelts are fastened, all electronic devices are off, and to signal the airline attentant to sit down. |

umm i don't think those answers are right... if i read them correctly. i believe when the plane is taking off and the ping goes off i believe its to buckle your seat belt and after it takes off and there is no turbulence then that ping signals everyone that's its ok to take off they're seat belts and you can move about the plane |
