I've flown on many 747's on flights as short as one hour and many two hour flights, but most, if not all of those flights were stopover flights that were continuing on to other destinations. 747's and 777ER's (extended range) have the longest range of all the airplanes in Boeing's fleet and are used mostly for long haul destinations, but the 747 is also by far the largest plane Boeing makes with the largest passenger capacity, and if the route a particular airline flies warrants a large capacity plane, then they certainly will use a 747 if it's feasible. For instance, I live in Asia and there is an airline named Orient Thai that exclusively flies 747's between Bangkok and Hong Kong, a flight of only about 2 1/2 hrs. |

If there are enough passengers to fill a single flight, a 747 is practical. This would mean relatively few flights over a route, or very heavy traffic over a route. A 747 can be flown on short-haul flights, too, if the traffic is dense enough to fill them. Western airlines these days mostly use them for long hauls, but they used to be used on much shorter trips, before the current trend of wasting fuel on a vast number of flights in small jets took hold, and they are still used on short-haul routes in some parts of the world (such as parts of Asia). |

Long-Haul
Usually from the U.S. 747 are used on international airlines for flights to Europe, Australia, and the Far East
Domestic usually use 767 and 777 for their US-Europe routes.

Mostly trans-Atlantic and Pacific flights. Or long hauls from Europe to Asia/Africa, etc... There are other long range planes out there so even going on a long haul flight you are not guaranteed to get a 747. If you look at each flight when booking, they usually list what type of plane you will be flying on. |

Ussualy flights over 3000 miles, and typically always international. But it can really vary. I once flew on a Thai Airways 747 from Bangkok to Phuket. And thats a 45 min flights.
It mostly depends on the airline carrier and how they see best use of them. |
