What happens if a flight is overbooked and no one volunteers to give up their seat for compensation?

Who ends up losing their seat?

Man from Mars
The last people who check in are asked, more directly told, to stay behind and wait for the next flight.

Becky
the last person to check in

They start offering money and other things (hotel room, free ticket) to people to convince them to give up their seats. In case nobody agrees the amount increases till somebody agrees.

Then your fucked...No christmas vacation this year.

1) The bar is open, and free drinks are given to all ticket holders.
2) After about an hour, a big box of claw hammers is brought in.
3) Announcement: "Last (how ever many seats avaiable) passengers still standing will board in ten minutes."

I would pay cash money to see that.

Robert B
I believe that the person who booked last is the first person to lose their seat, but I would say that this is a fairly rare occurence

skyhigh
The person who paid the least for their ticket is bumped first.

Flights are routinely oversold by 35%. All airlines do it, and it is a completely legal business practice.

And to the first poster that replied to this query: The White Man is the Minority, dipshit. Take a look around!

the person who checdks in last and shows up last because then their seat would of been given away already.

dcgirl
Anyone who has not checked in before the check-in cut-off (usually 30 minutes before the flight on a Domestic flight) loses their seats first. If there are still too many passengers for the plane, they start bumping based on the fare class--- not the service class (coach, first, etc) but the letter code like M or Y that describes the rules under which you purchased your ticket. Someone who purchased a full-fare coach ticket has a different letter code than someone who purchased a discount ticket and the discount-ticket-person gets bumped first.

There are a lot of different fare classes--- the same seat on the same flight can be purchased for the same price and end up in one fare class if purchased from the airline itself and a different fare class if purchased from Priceline or Expedia or those other services. Tickets you get from a reseller often have low-priority fare classes so your chances of getting bumped go waaaay up.

u can't overbook a flight... the system won't let you. only if its some kind of error.

Vince M
First checked in gets to keep their seats.

Bob P
Someone will be bumped, usually the last to check in.

Cate
they will only let the number of people for who there are seats check in, so if the flight is over booked, whoever turns up last for check in wont get on the flight

seemynewname
last to board ( or last to book in some airlines handbook but even then usually last to board )

they draw straws and the losers have to switch planes or ride on wings of the one they were scheduled on.
