You will get a message saying the phone is switched off or in an area with no reception!!

Mobile companies say using phones on planes can play havoc with their ground networks, because the antennae can't cope with relaying the signal from a phone which is travelling at 500mph.

They will not get the call since it is mandatory that all cell phones are turned off while the plane is flying. It will show up when they turn the phone on at the end of the flight as a missed call.

you will get their voice mail. phones must be turned off during flights.

If they are stupid enough to leave the phone on, it could ring. You will get a signal in the air sometimes. If you remember, the Pennsylvania flight that crashed on 9/11 had passengers making phone calls from their cells while flying. I suspect that while the plane is flying at 35000 feet you would lose a signal.

However, If a passengers phone rings while in flight, they could get into trouble. That's their fault, not yours. I frequently call people that I know are traveling just to leave a message for when they land.

Yes, the airplane has to make an emergency landing. Preferrably someplace close to a cellphone tower.

you will not get through,no signal

jedibill11
That's one of the interesting things about the 9/11 deal.
the only way to get a signal for your cell phone is to be in range
of the output towers. I worked for years as a window cleaner
and could not get a signal anywhere above 40 stories or so.
At the height commercial airplanes fly, it is virtually impossible
to make or receive calls

depends on altitude.......

Ok a couple of things will happen and it is dependent upon the altitude of the plane.

The antennas at the cell sites are pointed down toward the horizon so a commercial plane at cruse altitude SHOULDN'T get any reception and the phone will go to voice mail if they have that service.

At departure and arrival the plane is at a lower altitude and may be in the pattern of the antennas, the phone should be off for the rules and NOT the radio frequencies MAY ring. This will open up a whole kettle of fish should the airline wish to make a stink about having the phone on.

the plane explodes midair killing everyone inside.

just kidding. they haven't proven yet that cell phone frequencies interfere with navigational instruments, but the FCC still reccomends that you not risk it. wait until the person lands...

its hard for them to get a signal because of the latitude

anonymous
there phone will be turned off. but yea if it was on then you wouldn't have a signal because of the sped its going at and the fact that it has air traffic going on so that would block you out
