Everyone is right, but if you fly a low cost airline, like Ryanair or EasyJet, from Manchester to London, you may, again I say you may have to claim your luggage in London a go thru security and check luggage again..
Small and low cost carrier do not have agreement (interlining) with major airlines, so I would double-check with the originating airline.

Depends who you fly with -if you are getting a flight from Manchester on a cheapy airline like Jet2 then be assured your luggage will need to be collected before re-checking in. It is difficult to tell with internal flights, depends if it is a scheduled or charter flight, and airline itself. Otherwise your luggage normally gets transferred automatically. Ask when you check in at Manchester, or if you provide more info, i.e the airline, then you'll get a definitive answer.

In theory it is moved to the new aircraft for you - you do not have to do it yourself. In practise this sometimes doesn't happen and the luggage ends up somewhere else, like Rome if you fly BA. Have a pleasant journey.

If it is correctly labelled it should in theory be put on your connecting flight without you having any thing to do with it. If, however you are flying with BA it could end up anywhere in the world.

In this particular instance (Manchester to LA via London), your baggage will be transferred for you automatically at London.

On the way back (LA to Manchester via London), I think it will also be transferred automatically. I am on the understand that you will still be in transit in London and Manchester will be your port of entry for UK immigration purposes i.e. you will not pass passport control in London to collect your luggage to transfer it to your connecting flight.

On domestic flights (Manchester to London), they will transfer automatically. On international flights (such as Los Angeles to London), you have to collect your bags in the customs area at the city of entry (London) and then they will be recollected once you clear customs and placed on the flight to Manchester.

If you present both tickets on initial check in, your luggage is usually transferred to the second flight. You do not have to go through check-out, and check-in again; you go through "transit" to your second flight.

Usually the luggage is forwarded through to your destination without you having to do anything, But it is wise to check with your airline. Hope you enjoy your trip.

I think your baggage will be checked Thru to LA, although do you have a direct Flight to LA(Thru London)? If you fly lets say from London to Denver and then to LA you will have to collect you luggage. As soon as you land In America from overseas who will have to claim your luggage and go thru immigration. You should ask at the ticket counter. Enjoy America! Be careful LA can be crazy!

Of course, the luggage is moved for you on the next plane.

Let me get this straight. If you're going Manchester(UK)-London-LA, then you don't have to do a thing. When you're coming back, you might have to claim it in London, and re-check it. Have a good trip!

If it's London Heathrow, they'll probably lose it! Be sure not to leave anything you may need inside the suitcase. As the others say, transfer should be automatic but you can confirm it at Manchester check-in.
