The cheapest I could get was with BA, but the problem was with the return times, about 7am from JFK. Try getting there for 3 hours beforehand......
United Airlines are offering some fantastic deals at the moment as well, so check out their website. We are flying at the end of November and returning on 3rd December and got flights for about £300 return with Virgin. I called because I could not book on line and found myself through to the USA call centre (it was after 10pm) and was given cheaper prices than advertised on the website - although I was charged in dollars rather than pounds - but it was a saving of over £50. Just make sure you research ALL airlines. Sometimes an indirect route is actually cheaper (although a pain). Good luck :-)

I flew from New York (JFK) to Munich, with a layover in Dublin, using Aer Lingus in late August, prime travel season. Due to visa delays, I didn't book my flight until about 3 weeks before I left, and even then it was only about $550. It was the cheapest flight I found. I'm sure if you booked a flight now, you could get one from London to JFK for less than $500. Hope this helps!
