What is flying for the first time like? |
I'm flying for the first time in a couple of weeks. I'll be going to Denver, from Texas, and I'll be by myself. Can anyone tell me what flying is like-from takeoff, to cruising, to landing? I'm quite nervous about turbulence, and what I'll hear and feel during the flight! Also, if anyone has any suggestions of fun things to do while I'm there, that would be great! Thanks so much! |

You have nothing to worry about. You'll hear various noises, but they're all normal. 1) Just before the plane backs out of the gate you'll hear a couple loud bangs coming from under the floor; that's the sound of the baggage handlers closing the luggage bin doors. 2) Take-off is a lot of fun, but soon after you're airborne you'll get the sensation that the plane is slowing down. It's just the pilot adjusting the speed. He had to really gun the engines to get off the ground, but once airborne he's able to ease-up and fly at a normal cruising speed...about 500-600 mph 3) Whenever the jet flies through clouds there are minor bumps. Perfectly normal. 4) The occasional turbulence happens, but not very often. In the rare event that things get bumpy, I sometimes close my eyes and imagine I'm riding on a bumpy old wooden roller coaster. I love roller coasters so that helps me. 5). As you get close to your destination and the plane begins to descend, you'll go through more clouds...a few more bumps but nothing bad. 6) Around that time you'll hear a mechanical whirring sound and maybe a few clicks. When you hear that, look at the wings and you'll see extenders coming out the back of the wings to make them a bit wider. That allows the plane to land at a slower speed (150 -180 mph). It's necessary for the wings to expand, otherwise the plane would land at about 300mph and would need a huuuge runway. 7) Shortly before you land you'll hear a banging sound coming from under the floor again. That's the landing gear doors opening and the wheels extending. 8) When the plane lands on the runway, the engines will get REAL loud. That's called thrust reverse; basically flaps open around the sides of the engine housing to slow the plane quickly. Makes a lot of noise but only lasts a few seconds. Have a great trip! Denver is a lot of fun. You may want to take a day trip to Boulder, CO as well. It's a cool town. |

Take off is like the coolest hi speed race, like being in a rocket and being softly pushed back into your seat. Then the actual "take off", lifting into the air, it's so smooth floating up into the clouds. After you are in the air, the muffled sound of the engines puts some people to sleep, others enjoy watching TV or listening to music. Still others enjoy the view, lots to see from the air, great landscape! If the pilot needs to turn/pivot, that will be fun as well. The wing will dip and if you are on the side of the plane that's dipping, you'll get a great view of the surface. Landing is cool too. The plane will simply descend, slightly shaky landing then it will be like braking in your car. Don't worry, it will be great and you will love it. |

it's not bad. you'll feel a little pressure (gravity) as you take off, and then after about 5 minutes the plane will level off and you won't notice a thing. unless you go through a cloud or rain. if you go through a cloud the plane might tremble just a bit..
just remember that there are air pockets out there that may push the plane down for a second. you'll feel like your dropping for a second, but that's fine.
landing is fine, i've always had good pilots who make it so smooth. every once in a while you'll get a pilot who can't get both rear wheels to land at the same time. again, no problem, but it makes the landing rougher.
since it's your first time, also remember that to land they have to lower the wheels. as you descend, you'll hear some clunking under your feet. that's the door to the wheel well opening up and is perfectly fine.
also if you're in coach, the wings do wobble a little bit, no worries on that either. any other questions or concerns just hit that little help button above your head and they will come and answer any other questions. have fun! |

Flying is honestly a piece of cake
denver to texas will most likly be a jet so it will be a smoother, quicker, quieter ride
take off feels kind of weird you ears will pop so i suggest buying a pack of gum. Cruising is a breeze, I buy tonnes of magazines to read on the plane and it will be a quick flight so it will be fine. Landing your ears will hurt considerably more than take off so make sure you have gun. Turbulence feels like when you are in a car and hit a pot hole, that is the best way to describe it. |

For first time fliers, take-off and landing can be a little scary, and you may encounter a little turbulence. My 84 year old mother - on her first flight - was surprised that it didn't feel like she was going 500-600 MPH. She was rather bored. Your ears might get a little plugged up, but just yawn or chew gum to help with that. Flying is the only way to go. Have fun. Take a book ,magazine or CD player with you to pass the time. Denver is a beautiful city. Enjoy your trip. |

That's a piece of cake, not a very long flight, try flying for 14 hours straight with turbulence. Anyways it's alot of fun when the plane speeds up to take off, it's the best time for me but also the riskiest. Flying is nice as long as you don't have really sensitive air drums, you will like it. |

Nerve recking. I am not going to lie. The first time I ever flew I was so nervous and I sweat the whole flight. Upon take off your stomach jumps like when you are going over a bump in he road really fast. Once you are in the air, you will begin to calm down. Landing and taking off are nerve reckoning cause your stomach jumps. It is a weird feeling. You will be fine bring some gum and some reading material. Have fun on your trip. You will be fine. My first time I flew by myself so I talked to people around me and the flight and my nerves seem to go smoothly. HAVE FUN!!! |

take off is kinda weird. your kinda jus on the runway and then you jet off but its not that bad. cruising is easy, nothng really happens then unless you get turbulence. and landing is probably the easiest part. its not as scary or worryful as some people say. |

If you are afraid of heights distract yourself with stuff like crossword puzzles, but if not you will still want to keep yourself busy so you are not just sitting. |

Frankly, after the plain takes off it's like sitting in a big narrow lounge. Granted you flying in a jet, if you're in a propellor driven airplane the ride will be considerably bumpier but not what you would call adrenline filled in any event. |

Fear of flight is irrational. The plane is going to bump around a little bit from air moving up from the Earth-that's what turbulence is. It's usually a tiny bump, and I actually enjoy it-it is not in any way dangerous.
Walking on a city sidewalk or driving in your car is statistically more dangerous than flying.
Air travel is exhilarating. |

the take off sucks, and the landing... I've flown many times.
You'll feel alot of pressure, and as you get higher your ears will pop. Since its your first time, you'll probably be really tense at first. You'll calm down though. I have a video on youtube called "What its like on a plane." |
