♥Chew gum!!!♥

naddel
chewing gum

SWALLOWING. So get him anything that will produce saliva, bubble gums, sweeties, or even drinking water

Kobie
A useful trick that divers use is to 'equalise'. To do this, tell your son to hold his nose tightly and then blow through it as hard as he can. The pressure will pop his ears back out.

Hope that helps!

cognito44
Chewing gum or sucking on a boiled sweet.

chewing gum or ear plugs

My wife who is deaf suffers the same way. She uses a hot cloth on her neck along the tub leading out of the base of the ear. This causes the dried mucus that accumulates during the flight to flow and the air to equalize in the inner ear. Sometimes chewing gum or yawning does the same thing.

Careful not to burn yourself. It should be like the hot cloth they give when flying first class. Usually you can ask the flight attendant for a one. Just be sure to do it before descending. If the whole sinus seems blocked and painful - then vapory throat lozenges or candy such peppermint, menthol, or mint would help. Again a hot cloth on the forehead or below the eyes would also help.

Basically the dry air on the airline causes the mucus to dry and block air passages. (Drinking fluids during the flight can help prevent this.) These must be freed before descending or the air pressure differences will cause pain. Actually popping is a good thing - signally that the passage is free and air pressure equalized.

Hope this helps.

Take a deep breath, pinch nose and holding puffed out cheeks swallow, wriggle your jaw.

Its what you do to equalise your ears when you are scuba diving... there is a membraine in your ears... if the pressure either side is not equal it stretches and thats what hurts doing this opens the air passages to your ears and equalises the air... or something like that.

Practice it now and try and make your ears pop

If you have a cold it gets bloked and you cant do it... sudafed may help or other decongestant... just never us it while scuba diving (you would not want it to wear off underwater)

Marlin Darlin
THE VERY BEST THING IS TO PINCH NOSE AND BLOW GENTLY. THIS WILL CLEAR EARS ALMOST INSTANTLY. i DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE ON A DAILY BASIS as a fklight attendant and this is a proven method. It is also taught in scuba dive schools to equalize pressure in the ears underwater.

tucco
I get the same earache that extends down to the jawbone, earplugs mentioned, found wax ones are the only ones that work for me. no problems now!

MENTOS!!!!

-But really, any bottled water will do fine. Its all aout SWALLOWING. Thats how you "clear" your ears. That and yawning.

Author Al
I think chewing gum helps.

tpurtygrl
Have him chew gum it keeps the jaw moving and it doesn't allow that pressure to build up in the ear. Also make sure he's not congested either that will cause ear pain too.

Sucking a lollypop and leaning forward with fingers in your ears. I use to suffer with it really badly and was actually scared to fly anywhere cause of my ears but now i do this and i'm fine and travel all the time,

sabrina
chewing gum it will lessen the pain

Chewing gum puts pressure on your eardrums, and due to this the pressure from the air when your plane is lifting off or landing, is comprimised and your ears dont pop!

krystal
chew gum or you can also use ear plugs

I've found in my years of being a pilot that hard candy like peppermints, butterscotch, ect. works well if you don't like gum. If you keep clearing your ears on the way up and on the way down you should have no problems. Most cabin's pressure is only set to 5k-7k ft. Gum is still the best but hard candy can work well also.

Surething
The idea is that you keep popping your ears as you descend...so anything that will help him swallow will do this for him.

A sweet or chewing gum usually work well!

prizzma
tell him to chew something for instance chewing gum

When I was little my sister and I used to scream the house down because our ears would hurt on plane journeys. My mum used to tell us to put cotton wool in each of our ears for the duration of the journey and only take it out when we were back in the airport. I don't know why but it used to work and we would sit there a lot more relaxed. Perhaps it was a psychological thing?

Try it with your son but you have to sound convincing when telling him it will stop the pressure.

Hope it helps!

Fill your ears with corn. If it doesn't work, you still get a snack.

greg_bolton
insert small baby carrots in each ear, worked wonders for my kids year after year
