don't be scared. nothing bad is going to happen to you. take air sickness tablet 30mins before departure and i promise you, you wont feel sick on board.

sara
ohh don't worry at all!! I've been on airplanes since I was 2 and have been going on at least 4 times a year. Not once has anything happened, not even a false alarm or the plane shaking and my plane rides are 9 hrs long. The only thing that you might not like is getting airsick or being bored. Just take a travel tablet and bring music or magazines so you'll be occupied even though your plane ride shouldn't be long.

Get a window seat and think about looking at the earth from a distance and how interesting that would be. You are always going to be a little nervous during takeoffs and landings its just natural.

Before you fly do some reading on the way airplanes are constructed, what it takes to be a pilot, and all the safety measures the airlines take to keep you safe (not to mention all the safety features of an airplane). Learn and practice progressive muscle relaxation and deep abdominal breathing. Deep breathing and relaxation will keep you calm. Don't be afraid of what happened on Sept 11th. Since that day there have been a number of security measures taken and you are safe. Lastly, take some books, games, or an ipod to keep you busy. Whenever, I become anxious during flying I deep breathe or if the person in the next seat is friendly I'll strike up a conversation. Good luck!

First of all, don't worry about potentially being in a repeat of September 11- it's very rare for things like that to happen (if it wasn't, we wouldn't have made nearly as big a deal about it as we did...). Getting airsick is also pretty rare, but if you usually get carsick or have problems on carnival rides (don't worry, a plane ride is NOT as wild as a carnival ride!), bring Dramamine or similar products. Really, the worst part is the impossibly long security lines and the guaranteed flight delay (I have yet to go on a flight that wasn't delayed for at least 45 minutes). Don't worry about how young you are, either; most of the times I've flown were when I was around your age and it wasn't scary. (In fact, the first time I flew was when I was six years old- the automatic-flush toilets at the airport were the scariest part of the whole trip!) By the way, you never see how big the airplane is. When you board, you go straight from this big hallway in the airport to the door of the plane; at no time do you see any more of the plane than that.

Try to think of it as a fun ride. You don't need to think of the big scary plane because chances are you will not really see the whole plane since you will board from inside the building - just like walking along a corridor from one waiting lounge to another except the second one is the plane. If you like looking out of the window in cars and busses get a window seat. If you prefer not to see outside, get an aisle seat.

Get your mum to inform the staff during check in about your potential oxygen requirement - planes carry such items & have staff trained to use them should it be needed.

Take your MP3 player (if the airline allows it) and a couple of magazines or a good book. Maybe you can get the new Harry Potter book if it is out in time for your journey.

If you feel sick there is a bag in the pouch on the seat back in front of you. Also, there are pills to help if they do not interfere with your allergies and a cold drink can help a lot (sip - don't gulp. It is the action of sipping the cold drink rather than the quantity of cold liquid that helps) [Note to Sam here - Read the question, this is a12 year old - hardly old enough for a whiskey and water!]

Flying is safer now than it was. The world has learned that security is necessary as a result of 9/11. Your biggest worry should be whether you remembered to pack your toothpaste!

Look at the trip as an adventure & try to enjoy it. Let mom do the worrying.

1) In spite of everything, it's still safer to fly than for you to drive your car to the grocery store (or, in your case, to ride to the store).
2) Planes generally don't get jammed. That, and with the security measures they have currently, it's highly unlikely that anyone can get through to do that sort of thing.
3) Our country is prepared for an attack using our own planes as weapons--the terrorists won't try it again.
4) On the back of every seat there's a pocket with some boring magazines and a barf bag. People get airsick--it's completely normal.
5) If you're really worried about getting sick, see if your mom or dad will buy you some Dramamine (antimotion sickness medication)

I have flown several times.anxiety is common. Think of road accidents. Airplane accidents are very much less and happen rarely. Listen to i pod.Think of some childhood sweet memories. Meditate.

Phil
The likelihood of you being in airplane crash is very remote. Airport security is now designed specifically to look for possible terrorists and potential terrorist weapons. The accidental-type air crash is much less likely than a car crash. Airplanes are the safest mode of transportation there is.

If you think you'll be afraid, get an aisle seat and pretend you're on a bus. On the other hand, if you can be brave and sit by the window, you'll be amazed at the beautiful cloud formations you can see. Enjoy the ride!

If you get sick there is a bag placed infornt of all your seats. Best Way is to think your somewhere else, or listen to music, read a magazine, its not that long of flight so maybe even a short book, if your going with someone talk to them, trust me you'll be fine

**make sure you chew gum taking off and landing

i just moved from new jearsey! now i live in missouri.

i am only 11 years old, and last year i went on an airplane.

okay, so u should close ur eyes while ur r taking off, and broing something to do, or think about something pleasent to keep ur mind off of things. don't worry! millions of people fly each day, and there is a verry verry little chance of something happening to u!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry....you will be fine. It really is a neat experience. I think you should try to get a window seat. Just looking at the clouds is quite calming.

I suggest you taking some lavender oil on put just a little on a cotton ball and slowly breath it in. This will totally relax you. Try it at home first-you'll see. Also take a bath before you go in lavender wash and lotion. It really does help you calm down. Bring some of your favorite magazines or a book.

Taking off and Landing are a little anxious for everyone....that's totally normal. It gets pretty noisy and a little bumpy....but it's okay-just preparing you so you won't worry. People fly all the time. The terrorist thing is quite rare and I assure you will be safe.

Remember this.....you can't control what happens and you can't run away from everything for the rest of your life. Be proud of yourself for taking the trip and accept the good parts of it.

Also you can't tell how big the plane is when you board....it doesn't even feel like you're getting on a plane. When you are in the airport you go down a long hallway in which the end of it is connected to the plane. It's not like you see when Presiden Bush walks up the stairs outdoors. Just take slow deep breaths and enjoy your trip and Happy Belated Birthday!!

The first time I flew I thought it was so much fun. After living in the city I flew to I developed panic attacks and wanted to come home and I was so afraid to fly - like what could be worse than having a panic attack on a plane? Fortunately I was seated next to the most talkative army wife that probably ever existed. She talked and she talked and she talked and she talked and by the time I got back to Atlanta and only needed to take one more flight home I was exhausted. It was her distracting me that helped me make it back. That is the whole key - distract yourself. You can't order a real talker who won't shut up I know, but you can bring anything that will take your mind off the flight, favorite books, magazines, cds, tapes. And if you can get a Dr. to prescribe, Xanax or something similar to calm you down. The key is DISTRACTION. Whatever you think will take your mind off the trip.

dont be scared just cuz what happened to the twin towers. And everything you are thinking is negative, think positive. I have been on a planes before and the flight attendants are awesome they are sooo nice and there is no way a guy can have a knife in his bag or pocket or w.e cuz they check everything before you enter into a plane. Your trip doesent really sound very far to me so it should not be a problem. It will be fine. Just have a positive mind and attitude. The planes dont get jammed. Start meditating if you are really that scared and when you meditate think of good thing not bad. If you get airsick its depends on what plane you go on some planes have bags so you can vomit in if you get airsick and after you vomit in the bag give it to the flight attendant. Some planes that dont have bag to vomit in, go to the washroom all planes have washrooms and vomit in the washroom come out and tell the flight attendants you dont feel well and you are airsick. Believe in yourself and stop thinking negative. I bet you a billion dollars that once you have been on planes you will always want to go on places cuz its sooo nice inside and everyone is soo nice there especially the flight attendants and their food is just amazing and again it depends on which plane you choose.

I have been on airplanes about 10 times. Every time I had fun. That sounds like a pretty short flight, so I don't think that you have to worry about getting bored. After I heard about the twin towers, I was sort of afraid about flying again, but that was a terrist attack, and unless you captain is a terrist I think you should be fine. I have never seen anybody get plane sick before. Taking off at first seems a little scary, but it is very fun to look out the window and see the city from an arrial view. The whole process of flying is very fun for me. Even in the airport. I am afraid of heights but I am not afraid of being in an airplane. I would not worry one bit about flying. The worst that would happen is getting airsick. Have fun, and don't worry at all!
