As a server I was not allowed to ask fo tips. Asking will only anger people and get you in trouble no matter how polite you are about it. I am very concious about tipping people who work for them since I have been in the situation before but honestly I would not have thought about tipping for your service either. If the flight attendants are not allowed to accept tips then I would assume that all airport and airline employees follow the same rules.

Tipping is a something that is done out of gratitude for your services. It is not required. As the recipient, you should appreciate what you get and not be disgruntled about what you don't get. Many people that are in wheel chairs are on fixed incomes and receive only disability checks where every penny is counted. They may not be able to afford to tip you. Tipping you could mean the difference between getting a gallon of milk or not getting one. I don't think you really mean to be selfish. But this question does make you sound so. In answer to your question, don't ask at all. Don't count on tips as part of your income. Be gracious for what you get. +=

Tips have to be earned. Go out of your way to find out what people need, and then do it; try to anticipate their needs, and take care of them before they have to ask. People give tips for extraordinary service.

The surest way to turn off a potential tipper is to request a tip. It seems to me as if *you* are the selfish one.

You are a wheelchair agent at an airport. Is your salary scale similar to a waitress, in which they get an hourly rate of $2.15 because most of the hourly wage is expected to be made up by tips left on their table by patrons? Or are you getting a minimum or better wage per hour?

I don't tip the ticket counter at the airlines, the gate attendant or the flight attendant. I also know their wages are not based on tips. It's not that i don't appreciate their service but if you are a part of this industry, chances are no one has even thought about tipping you if we don't tip the rest of the staff.

I have to agree that you can't demand a tip from people. But if you're wages are similar to a waitress, less than minimum wage, then I'd sit down with my manager and ask what they can do as a company to educate the public.

Regardless, people garner tips by excelling at what they do, no easy job when you're simply wheeling a person to a gate. See what you can do to offer some kind of personal attention or service to your passenger and if you're sincere, chances are you'll be tipped without ever having to ask for it again.

If your dress code allows it, wear a pin that says "Tips appreciated." Unfortunately, a lot of people don't feel that they need to tip you because you're doing your job. They don't understand that you may be paid a lower hourly rate because your tips are supposed to bring you up even. With the pin they're being informed without you having to ask. However, if people continue not to tip, there's nothing you can do about it. It's their personal choice, and even if you don't like it, it does make you look bad to come out and ask.

People are obsessed with getting tips for everything!!! It gets outrageous. If you need more money, get a new job!! Go back to school and get a profession where you make enough money that you don't have to ask for tips!! LOSER!!
ASKING POOR CRIPPLED OR HANDICAPPED PEOPLE FOR MONEY TO "HELP" THEM.

All the above answers are valid.
Will you tip the erderly(nurse assistant) at an hospital whom took you from your room to the surgery room and back??
Same service and maybe same paycheck than yours.

In any job you should never ask for a tip. It is rude, and makes you look foolish. People will tip when it is appropriate. Maybe you could attach a subtle tip jar to the wheelchairs? Ask your boss if you could have a sign that says tips greatly appreciated. Never under any circumstance is it OK to verbally ask.

This is a delicate situation because the airlines tell us the service is complimentary (= FREE), but elderly people often tip anyway. I had to use the service for a medical reason, coming in from abroad, and had no US money. But I assume that there is no delicate way to ask, just like for bellboys in hotels. Maybe "If my service was exceptional, gratuities are accepted."

weeesa2004
After providing your service ask if there is anything else you could do for them politely with the most fake'st smile :) i just don't think people know to tip..i wouldn't have known honestly..if you are unsatisfied with you job just find something else because its rude to ask for a tip..and an a hole thing to NOT tip..unless ur a student like me..jk jk i TIP

Think a lot of of these answers provide good points.

Tips are earned and its rude to ask for them, however, if your company provided buttons to wear that stated "tips appreciated" or something similar, that would help. I think many people don't know whether they should tip the wheelchair agent. Foreign travelers may also not know to tip as tipping is not common for this type of service outside the US. I tried to tip a wheelchair agent in Singapore and he refused the tip. Found out they are salaried, very proud to provide this service, and actually feel insulted when you offer them a tip.

Also, the person that admonished you because they're under the impression that the only people that use your services are poor, handicapped people w/ limited income and can't afford a tip. If they can afford to fly, they can afford a tip - even if its only a dollar. As a travel agent, I re-quest wheelchair services for clients all the time. The majority of these people are not handicapped, they're simply older and have difficulty walking long distances or have temporary medical conditions, such as a broken leg or sprained ankle. These are people that book high-end vacations, are appreciative of your type of service and will tip generously if they receive good service.

I think the biggest problem is people don't know they should tip you. I make it a point to let my clients know to tip the wheelchair agents as I don't think most of them realize they should. When they ask what amount they should provide, I let them know they should consider an amount based on the effort you provide, how you assist them through security points, the distance you wheel them through the airport, and the total amount of time you spend with them. If they still ask for a dollar amount I tell them $5-10 when they take all of the above into consideration.

Hope this helps.

I was once told that "we are paid by tips". I agreed and gave a tip. I felt he did the right thing to say it this way.
