Here's what I do:
1) Call my immediate family and my boyfriend and have a nice chit-chat and make sure the last thing I say is I love you
2) Say a little prayer as soon as I'm on the plane
3) Have a fab time the night before so I'm tired but happy. I make sure I'm in really comfy clothes and have my awesome inflatable travel pilow. I'm often asleep before take-off! |

do not look out the window. I repeat: DO NOT LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!!! I had the same problem, and I found that pretending I was sitting on a bus (by not looking out the window) and talking to the person next to me on the flight really made me feel safe. |

Do you fly regularly? Depending on your anxiety level anything from deep breathing exercises to an Rx from your physician can help. Alcohol which must be in moderation just before and early in your flight can help you to relax. Don't have too much....we've all seen the jerks who do that and end up loud and disruptive for everyone else on the flight. Do you have to fly?? If so, research how strongly aircraft are built, with all the redundancy systems built in for 2nd , 3rd and 4th back-up systems. Aircraft are built to last decades, very tough construction. A Jumbo can land with only one of it's 4 engines operating.
Realize that almost all turbulence is like a bus hitting a series of very bad potholes in the road.....
If possible, visit an aircraft manufacturing site. The owners and employees normally fly very often....they don't build junk.
Finally, get it in your head that 99.95 per cent of injuries involving flying are due to not wearing seatbelts, even loosely, during turbulence, and from not moving around a bit when you can to loosen up muscles and relieve tension.
You'll be just fine and enjoy the adventure much more. |

Read a book, watch a movie or sleep. Do anything that can distract you from thinking that you are flying. :) |

I always say the Lord's prayer and pray before I take off. Then I either read once the plane has taken off or talk with someone to take my mind off the flight. After a little while, it no longer scares me. Good luck! |

DRUGS. If you are old enough to drink, drink alcohol. If you can get to your family physician, ask for calming meds for your anxiety. Valium, Xanex, Klonopin- all winners in the calm you down for some serious drooling category. Flight? You will not only forget the flight, you will forget where you left from and where you are going. |

You can take 1/2 or a whole "immovane" which I normally use as my sleeping pill if I can't get to sleep. I totally puts you at ease, and you may even get some shut-eye during the flight. That's my remedy. But if immovane isn't good for you, then have a couple gin and tonics. |
