What is the best way to get an overseas airline seat with extra leg room? |
I am very tall -- 6'7" -- and am always uncomfortable on flights due to lack of leg room. I will be flying to Europe in July and I am nervous I will really suffer on the 8-hour flight (from O'Hare to Dublin on an American Airlines Boeing 757 economy class). I have heard if you arrive to the airline ticket counter super early (like 7-8 hours before the flight) you can request an exit row with added leg room and it's likely you'll get an exit row (when the ticketing agent sees how tall you are and that you're able to pop the door in case of emergency). Does anyone have expereince or advice for my situation? Thanks! |

you should request the row for emergency exit. it's usually by the wings and have wider leg room. it's 4 hrs before an international flight is when they open their counter. make sure u walk around the cabin during your 8 hr flight. it helps with the blood circulation. |

Exit row will do it. Depending on what airlines you fly, you can try calling that airlines "Special Needs" department. Tell them your physical dimensions and request an exit row for your flight. IMO you have a "special need" and they can pre-assign the exit row seat for you. Otherwise it's a roll of the dice if you do it at check-in. |

I fly back and fourth to China every thirty day. If you go on line to American airlines website and enter your itinerary number you can sometimes change your seating to an exit seat. It is my opinion that an Aile seat is a better choice for longer flights. Also make sure you sign up for mile rewards, this way after you accumulate enough mile you can use them to upgrade to a better class. |

Ask for the bulk head row. It has twice the leg room but it does not have the underneath storage room for bags and miscellaneous, but well worth it. You can get there early to request a seat but I'd also call and try to reserve the seat you would like as well. If you go on line to the web site of the airline you can also check out the planes seating arrangement, usually. Good luck. |

Pay alot more for international business class (much like normal first class), theyre nice and actually allow you to sleep |

Sure, you are going to be uncomfortable... The only way that I know of is to request the seat when you book your reservation... if you have already booked it, call asap and request the seat now - if you wait until the day of the flight it probably will not be available... and more than that, request the aisle seat in the first row of emergency door seats.. that is best... good luck |

Ring the airline and see if you can pre book seats with extra room. It will cost you, but its better to be comfortable. |

Emergency exit rows can't be prebooked on U.S. airlines (unless things have radically changed since I flew). Double check that but they were assigned at the airport because of the special regulations governing who sits there. Foreign airlines often have similar rules. You have to be an able-bodied adult over the age of 15.
If you are traveling with someone, be willing to split up and tell the agent when checking in. Not sitting next to your honey is far outweighed by having that extra leg room!
You'd be surprised how many people beg for those seats, citing all sorts of phyical needs, and then when I managed to get them a seat there, they wont take it because they would have to sit apart. Asking for two might be pushing it.
If you show up 7-8 hours before the flight, you probably wont be able to check-in. Different airlines have different rules but 3 hours is the max I've seen. Yes, those connecting on to your flight get the advantage.
Remember that emergency exit rows are not always bulkheads, nor always over the wings. Not all even have the legroom. On 727's, for example, some are only have a tiny bit of space and there is another row in front of you. Be clear that you need the *emergency exit rows* with extra legroom.
You have to be willing to help out in an emergency. No, you don't have to "pop" or open the door. That would only be if the F/A were incapacitated. Normally, you go down first on the slide and help the people coming down after you. Sometimes too they help direct things from inside the cabin but you would stay by the door and never expected to put yourself in any unnecessary harm.
I have a friend who's 6'10" and he's a big traveller. He just came back from Europe in Economy and really suffered! |
