Just curious on some answers...

Airline seat belts are particularly useful when an airplane encounters turbulence. When this occurs, a plane can rise or fall very quickly, and passengers who are not belted into their seats can easily be slammed against the ceilling of the cabin, or otherwise injured. A few years back, a couple of passengers were killed in an incident (I think it was an American Airlines jet) where a plane descended very unexpectedly, and it prompted airlines to recommend that passengers use their seatbelts unless they actually had to be out of their seats.

if you've ever been on a plane that has experienced severe turbulents, you wouldn't have to ask

The was recently an article in "The Economist" about this. Seatbelts actually improve safety a lot. They protect against severe turbulance injuries.

Turbulance could send you flying from one end of the plane to the other without a seatbelt.

groverraj
To hold you in during Take off and Landings and turbulence.

I was on a flight to Australia, when 6 hours into the flight we hit some kind of wind shear or air pocket... the plane dropped a few hundred feet... the guy in front of me hit his head on the air vents and was bleeding profusely.

I always wear my seatbelt, even while sleeping on a plane any class I fly.

Well, ya know...sometimes it can get quite turbulent up there...there have been reported incidences of planes dropping several hundred feet and unsecured passengers flying up and hitting the ceilings.

it would help in turbulence and if the plane has structural damage and a portion of it flies off in flight you won't be sucked out. It can happen and it has...

If you experience strong turbulence that can literally knock you out of your chair then you would make sure to wear your seat belt. Seat belts are also in the event of sudden drop or crash. This is rarely the case though. You are more likely to get in a car crash than a plane crash.

so when you do crash it is easier to find the body..

no it really for air turbulence, it will help keep you in your seat if the plane drops down or shakes in the air...

so they can find your body if the plane crashes

so that when the plane crashes and everyone dies they can identify who's who from the tickets/ seat numbers.

louser777
Often during take off, flight and decent (Landing) the air can become turbulent and a person could be thorwn about the cabin. Even while seated, a person could injure themselves on the seat in front of them if thrown into it quickly. It also keeps passengers from getting up during those times and walking around, which can be very dangerous during turbulent times of the flight.

Just like a car, if you crash, somethings gotta hold you in.

so if you fall out of the sky your head wont go throught the top of the plane

duoak
Honestly, I think it's just a ploy to prevent people from getting up, walking around the cabin, and annoying the flight attendants.

It gives one a false sense of security I guess.
