Life jackets are kept onboard airplanes incase the plane needs to make an emergency water landing. Aside from the life jackets, there are also seat belts, oxygen masks, and much more life-saving equipment that is kept on an aircraft. |

The inflatable slides act as life rafts also. Also, the seat bottoms act as floating devices in the place of lifejackets. |

A life jacket is meant to protect people from drowning incase the aeroplane crashes into the ocean/ any waterbody. |

In case of an water emergency life jackets (usually under the seat or the cushion itself) provide floatation for injuried passengers or for those passengers who dont know how to swim. These life jackets have saved lifes in the past.
Oxygen may also be provided in the cabin in case pressure is lost or a passenger has breathing complications. First aid kits and breathing apartatus.
Also emergency exits such as overwing doors and inflatible slides also serve as life saving devices. |

There are life preservers on over water aircraft. on aircraft not designed to go over water there are seat cushions that can be used as a flotation device. You have your seatbelts, and your oxygen masks that are located above you seat and will pop out should a loss of cabin pressure occur. There are emergency slides on the door exits which in the event of a land emergency are the quickest routes of evacuation (assuming the airplane is in one piece). There are also enhanced medical kits and AED's on board most planes, should a medical emergency occur. Your flight attendants are highly trained and qualified to assist in these types of emergencies. BTW, there are NO parachutes on US commercial airliners. |

The reason they have life jackets on board the airplane, is in case of a water landing. They also have inflatable life boats, oxygen tanks, a very detailed first-aid kit. |

The purpose of having lifejackets on an airplane is that in case the plane goes down in water (after all the earth is 3/4 water, so if a plane is going to crash it could very well go down into water) surviving passangers can use the jackets to stay afloat.
Other lifesaving equiptment on aircrafts include parachutes and oxygen masks in case pressure drops. |

There are no life jackets on planes. Seat bottoms are removable to use as flotation devices should a plane be forced to land in the water! |
